ST. HELENA ISLAND/FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. - Dr. Lydia M. Contreras and Dr. Lealon L. Martin were united in marriage at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Ebenezer Baptist Church in St. Helena Island, S.C. Head Matrimonial Officiant was Reverend Leonard Comithier, pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church, Albany, N.Y., and Assistant Revs. Francisco and Xiomora Peralta, Bronx, N.Y. A welcome dinner was held Friday, May 14, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the Magnolia Manor, Fripp Island Resort, S.C. After the wedding, a Sunset Beach Party was held on Fripp Island, S.C. On Sunday, May 16, 2010 a Thank You Brunch was held at Fripp Island Beach Club. Lydia is the daughter of Mrs. Rosa and Mr. Gilberto Maldonado of Yonkers, N.Y. and Mr. Danilo and Mrs. Altagracia Contreras of White Plains, N.Y. She is the granddaughter of Mr. Guillermo Martinez and the late Mrs. Maria Martinez, and also the late Mrs. Lidia Contreras and the late Mr. Antonio Polanco of New York, N.Y. Lydia is a graduate of Riverdale Country School in New York, N.Y., Princeton University, Princeton, N.J., with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. She is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the Belfort Lab, at the Wadsworth Center in Albany, N.Y. Lealon is the son of Mrs. Alstyne Green Martin of North Augusta, S.C. He is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lealon and Josie L. Green of Aiken, S.C., the late Mr. and Mrs. Alexander (Bill) and Emma Martin of Augusta, Ga. Lealon is a graduate of North Augusta High School in North Augusta, S.C., Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Ala., with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Doctorate of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering from the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) in Los Angeles, Calif., and a post doctoral fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of California - Berkeley in Berkeley, Calif. He is currently a Professor in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her step-father. Lydia chose her friend, Liza Maldonado-Shue of San Antonio, Texas, to serve as her matron of honor. Bridesmaids were friends of the bride: Jaia Thomas of Los Angeles, Calif., Keesha Hayes of Boston, Mass., Eloise Barrow of Denver, Colo., Linelle Fontenelle of Ithaca, N.Y. and Cynthia Pierre of Boston, Mass. Flower Maidens were Danya Contreras and Larissa Contreras of White Plains, N.Y., both sister of the bride. Hostesses were Audrey Pichardo of Bronx, N.Y., friend of the bride, Tashauna J. Braddon and Teyanna M. Mealing, both of St. Albans, N.Y., cousins of the groom. Lealon chose his friend, Oma Joseph Gorman of Union City, Tenn., to serve as his best man. Groomsmen were Marquis Martin of North Augusta, S.C., nephew of the groom; Danilo A. Contreras of Austin, Texas, brother of the bride; Byran Fitzgerald Johnson of Montgomery, Ala., and Cedric Luckey of Columbia, S.C., both friends of the groom. The ring bearer was Christian Devers of New York, N.Y., friend of the bride and groom. Ushers were Devin Cobb of Jacksonville, Fla., friend of the groom and Ashua Encarnacion of Queens, N.Y., friend of the bride. The wedding director was Savonia Adams of the Rocquil's Special Moments in Orangeburg, S.C. The photography was LaBella Vita; Carolina Jasmine Florists; Smokey Chef catering, all of Beaufort, S.C. The Patron and Matron of the Broom were Greg and Terry Owens of Albany, N.Y., both friends of the bride and groom. Soloists were Greg Owens and Nija Davis-Pedlar, both of Albany, N.Y. Musicians for the pre-ceremony and ceremony solos were Raphael Jones of Albany, N.Y., friend of the bride and groom and Destined Jazz Band of Orangeburg, S.C. Following the ceremony, a reception was held on the ground of the historic Penn Cultural Center on St. Helena Island, S.C. Aunt Pearlie Sue Gullah Folk Tradition of St. Helena Island, S.C. entertained at the cocktail hour along with an art exhibition by Red Piano Art Gallery on St. Helena Island, S.C. Destined Jazz Band provided live music at the reception along with entertainment by Aunt Pearlie Sue. The bridal party was transported in the Low Country Adventure Trolley from the church to the site of the reception. After the reception, the bride and groom were transported to the Fripp Island Resort by the Low Country Adventure Trolley where pictures were taken at the ocean. The newlyweds honeymooned in Vienna, Austria and St. Lucia. The couple will reside in Austin, Texas. Lydia will begin her academic career as a tenure-tract Assistant Professor at the University of Texas-Austin in the Engineering Department and Lealon will enroll full time at the University of Texas-Austin School of Law while teaching in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Thanks to all who traveled to St. Helena Island and Fripp Island, S.C. to celebrate the weekend wedding of Lydia and Lealon.
