50th Wedding Anniversary
Fifty years ago, on June 14, 1969, Kari Lynne Palmer, R. N., and Harry Charles Miller, M.D., were married by Rev. Paul Barreu in the Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church, Brighton, N.Y. A half-century later they are celebrating their union on a Canada Rail train traveling from Vancouver, B.C., to Banff, Alberta, Canada.
They started their marriage with a Golden Retriever and four children from Dr. Miller's previous marriage. Along the way they added two more daughters and several successive dogs. They moved from Brighton after two years, when Dr. Miller joined the Urology Department of the University of Oklahoma, and then two years later became the Chair of Urology at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He remained at G.W.U. until he retired in 1995.
They've had a full and enjoyable life together, and consider themselves 'very lucky' in many ways. After retiring from G.W., and watching Northern Virginia grow and fill with people and traffic, they chose to move to Charlottesville, Va., a quieter "college town". There they have continued to enjoy life together, traveling to see their six far-flung children and eight grandchildren, spending summers on Canandaigua Lake, parts of winters in Palm Desert, Ca., and otherwise staying busy in C'ville. Harry has embraced oil painting as a new hobby, with an exhibit last spring at U Va. Kari took the Leadership Charlottesville Course and later was named one of the city's Distinguished Dozen. It's been a good life, and when they look back on the fifty years, they both say "Who'd'a thunk it?" A twenty-two year old girl and a forty-year old father raising four kids, what were the odds?? It took love, work, patience, and understanding, and lots more. But they agree, it was all worth it.
