Jim and Nina Bates celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 31, 2013, at the Lakeside Country Club with an event hosted by their children: Brian and Beckie Bates, Brandon and Suzette Bates and Brad and Mica Bates. Many other family members, friends from Marshall and their friends from out of town enjoyed a wonderful evening of food, fellowship and dancing. Jim and Nina enjoyed renewing of friendships and recalling memories from their 50 years of marriage. Each of their sons and their “adopted” daughter, Amy Ford Brumfield, shared thoughts about the couple.
The couple married on August 31, 1963 at First Methodist Church in Denver City, Texas, the hometown of Nina McConnell Bates. They met at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, while attending the School of Pharmacy there. They lived in Austin, New Braunfels, and Conroe before returning in 1972 as co-owners of Matthewson Drug Company in Marshall, joining their friends Ronnie and Libby Matthews in business. That partnership endured for 29 years!
Jim and Nina both worked as pharmacists and drug store owners while raising their three boys. Brian and Beckie Bates are now owners of the family business, living in Marshall with their two daughters, Hannah and Sarah. Brandon and Suzette and their children, Jackson and Abby live in Jackson, Miss. Brad and Mica Bates and their children, Marleigh, Brinkley and Sadie live in Crossroads, Texas (Denton). Amy Ford Brumfield and her husband, David live in Collierville, Tenn.
Jim and Nina are active members of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Marshall. Jim serves as an Elder and Sunday School teacher and Nina leads Women’s Ministry Bible Studies. They are founding members of that church and minister with that congregation in many ministries in the city.
Jim is an avid cyclist, serving as president of the local Maverick Chain Gang (Marshall Bicycle Club) and enjoys golfing, reading and building birdhouses. Nina enjoys workouts at the Marshall Life Center and joins Jim riding their tandem bicycle, reading, and working in their yard. They love to travel, visit friends and family.
They want to thank everyone who came to celebrate this milestone with them!
