Crites 75th Anniversary Wanda (89) and J.H. (93) Crites celebrated 75 years of marriage on November 24th in their home of 60 years in Austin, Texas. Growing up along the Red River in Texas, they married at ages 14 and 18 in Oklahoma. Wanda and J.H. saw a lot in their lives including the Depression and World War II, where J.H. served as a Merchant Marine. Before he went to war in 1940, Wanda had their first child, Joyce. They were told by their doctor that they were likely not going to have any more children. They defied medicine and had 8 more. After the war, J.H. worked as a master electrician and Wanda was a stay-at-home mother. She was also very involved in her community and was awarded the Yellow Rose of Texas, an honor given to volunteers that contribute a large of amount of time to their community. During the 70's, 80's and 90's, they were both poll workers for Travis County elections. Being ever the non-partisans, Wanda staffed the Democratic table and J.H. staffed the Republican table. Wanda enjoys quilting and J.H. raised ponies and tended to a small vineyard. They have lived to see seven generations of their family including their 9 children, 22 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
