Charles L. and Linda L. (Wagner) Shaffer of Spring Grove celebrated 50 years of marriage on March 9, 2013.
The couple met as neighbors when they were young and were in the same classes in school. They married in 1963 at Hanover Wesleyan Church, Hanover, and took a honeymoon trip to Luray Caverns and the Skyline Drive in Virginia.
To honor their anniversary, their children planned a getaway weekend for their whole family at Trough Creek Laurel Lodge near Raystown the first weekend in March. Their children also took them to AKI Japanese Restaurant in Hanover for dinner on the day of their anniversary.
Charles is the son of the late Jacob and Betty Shaffer, formerly of Hanover. He retired from P.H. Glatfelter in Spring Grove after 40 years of service.
Linda is the daughter of the late Clyde and Cora Wagner, formerly of Hanover and Glen Rock. She retired after 26 years of employment in the financial field and 35 years in the health industry.
The couple has four children, Sheri and husband, Darryl Bankert of Spring Grove, Jeff and wife, Kim Shaffer of Hanover, Kevin and wife, Michelle Shaffer of Red Lion, and Matthew and wife, Dawn Shaffer of Spring Grove; four grandchildren, Zach and Drew Bankert, and Tara and Sammi Shaffer; one great-granchild, Briana Coleman; and one great-grandchild on the way.
Charles and Linda enjoy being with their family. They also enjoy traveling and have been to Alaska, New York, and Florida.
They attribute the length of their marriage to having God in their lives, which helped them to have a solid foundation. They also believe in working through things, as divorce was never an option for them. Some advice that they would give to others is: During troubled times, always remember what you loved about your partner, then fall in love again. Say "Thank You" a lot and always be aware of the things that you do for one another and you will want to do more.
