Ruthanna Laird of York celebrated 60 years of marriage on January 4, 2013.
The couple met in high school and were married in 1953 at Dover Bethany E.U.B. Church. George left for the Army soon after their wedding, so they were not able to take a honeymoon trip.
To celebrate their anniversary the Lairds had breakfast with their family at Shady Maple Smorgasbord in Lancaster County on February 2.
George is the son of the late Walter Bruce and Elsie Laird of Dover. He retired from Flemming, Inc. (formerly P.A. & S. Small Co.) after 39 years of service. He currently works part time at Pep Boys.
Ruthanna is the daughter of the late Jacob and Annie Berkheimer of Dover. She retired from Tighe Industries in 1993.
The couple has four children, Randy and wife, Kim Laird of York, Lindell and husband, Kevin Gladfelter of Felton, Gregory and wife, Annette Laird of Felton, and Daniel and wife, Lori Laird of Wrightsville; seven grandchildren, Travis Laird, Stevi Laird, Rachel Gladfelter, Seth Gladfelter, Mandi Waltemyer, Niki Laird, and Levi Laird; and five great-grandchildren, Emma Waltemyer, Gabe Waltemyer, Kennady Laird, Kaleigh Laird, and Kaitlyn Laird.
George and Ruthanna enjoy camping, playing cards and board games with friends, church work, and being with family. Their travels have taken them on two trips to the western U.S., New England, and winters in Florida.
They attribute the length of their marriage to their faith in God and a good sense of humor.
