Dr. Saltzman touched my life. In the second week of my first class, he/we dissected George and Martha in Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe" and I knew my life would never be the same. Thank You.

Dr. Saltzman
A subtle, dry wit,
Unnoticed by so many,
Prized by the back row.
He was an excellent professor and appreciated by many. His comments may have offended a few, but there were also those who were shown a sharp mind is not a liability.

The best thing that can be said about a person's life is that they touched those around them. Dr. Saltzman has been in my thoughts many times over the years. His passion for literature is impossible to forget. I will never be able to see or hear the word 'salami' without flashing back to the infamous 'hard salami' lecture, which left a classroom in stitches and this student covered in diet Dr. Pepper. I still laugh long and hard when I think of it. I hope I make you proud, Dr. Saltzman. You will be remembered.

If Art was one thing it was memorable. He will never be forgotten nor will his love and devotion to Joy and his family.

Art was more than a great professor. He was my mentor, my confidante, and my friend. Aside from everything he taught me about writing, I'll never forget what he taught me about myself. I am a much better person having known him and I am grateful.

Dr. Saltzman was one of my favorite instructors at Missouri Southern in 1984-1985. I graduated with a journalism degree, and greatly enjoyed his creative writing course. He called me his "Weird Tales" writer, and sure enough I went on to publish short fiction professionally. I owe him a great debt for his support and insightful teaching. He was a talented writer and a wonderful, unforgettable teacher.

Art was a great teacher and a funny guy but most of all he was a great person! He was the best step father a guy could have and I know that everyone else that he was close to wishes he were still here.

Dear Joy, I am thinking of you. I wish now I had spent more time visiting and schmoozing with Art. I feel the loss for you but also for myself. My words will never be enough. Sadness here in Petaluma. Love eddie

Unshakable and brimming with wit and warmth, Dr. Saltzman challenged us not only to learn about language but also to feel and experience it. His classes forever changed the way I take in the world. My deepest sympathies go to his loved ones – and to all those who never experienced his magic.

Art and I were classmates from junior high (I went to his bar mitzvah!) through college and for years after that. I will always remember his marvelous dry sense of humor and his tremendous love for teaching. He was passionate about those people and things he cared about and I am proud to have known him. My heartfelt condolences to his mother (with whom I remember having some wonderful conversations), his brother, and all the members of his family. You are in my thoughts as you go through this difficult time.

Dr. Saltzman was a fantastic professor. I enjoyed his classes, writing, and his great sense of humor. Because of him, I became a fan of DeLillo, William Gass, Vonnegut, and Philip Roth. My sympathy to Dr. Saltzman's family, especially to Elizabeth...he talked about you all the time...how much he adored you.

Dr. Saltzman-How to begin?
He was a man who changed my view of how the world worked and how often I should go to class. He pushed me when I needed it, and I could not be the person I am without that slow, knowing smile and the stories in class that sometimes touched and sometimes poked. He was a man who so often saw what was possible or connected before others, and I will miss him dearly. Dr. Saltzman made me work, but in return he gave me a bit of myself I didn't know I was missing. I send my very best to Joy and Jeremy-my thoughts are with you. I miss him too.

I will never forget this man - for his wit, charm, and above all approach to the craft of writing. Dr. Saltzman always seemed to have his finger on the pulse of literature, and unlike most scholars, could make you see what he saw. This alone is what separated him from being a good teacher and being a great teacher. We all have lost something with this man's passing.

Art's passing reminds me that you should never miss a chance to say hello. I saw that he was having a book signing at Hastings and murmurred to myself, "I should go." I knew Art since I was a kid in Marla's Enrichment classes and then I got to know him when I became an adult in his Creative Writing classes at MSSU. I will miss him and his smiling, finger-wagging interjections. Sympathies to Marla, Joy, and all who knew and loved his heart and soul.

I was so sorry to hear of Art’s passing. He was an amazing professor and an insightful and talented writer. I considered him a friend and an inspiration. Much will and should be said about his humor and way of life. His capacity to feel and experience so much living added to the luster of his words. It was an honor and privilege to know him. My thoughts go out to Joy, Elizabeth, Jeremy and the rest of his family and friends. Peace to all.

Art was teacher of the very first class I walked into when I returned to school in my early 30s and was a big reason why I didn't turn tail and run. Within minutes I knew I'd found a home, and over the next few years I returned to his classes again and again. He was witty and inspiring and tough, a true master of his craft. When he lectured, he threw in unexpected gems of humor, unevenly spaced so that students had to hold onto every word in order to catch them all. And we did hold onto those words! I admired him and loved him dearly.
