BERNARD GARTLAND Obituary
Bernard J. "Mike" Gartland, age 73, of Dyer, IN, formerly of Chicago, IL, passed away peacefully at his home, Monday, June 13, 2011. Loving husband of 52 years of Janet M. Gartland, nee Hughes; cherished dad of Elizabeth Figiel, Diane, Mary, Pam and Michelle Gartland; beloved papa of Michael, Jessica, Kelsie, Emma and Karlie; great-papa of Ethan; dear brother of Mary (Rich) Brouilette and William (Ann) Gartland; dearest son of the late Thomas and Mary Gartland, nee Steed; kind uncle of many nieces and nephews; and a fond brother-in-law of many. Visitation Thursday, June 16, 2011 from 2 to 9 p.m. Prayer service Friday, June 17, 2011 at 9 a.m. from the Smits Funeral Home James E. Janusz - Director, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane (Rt. 30 & Pleasant Springs Lane), Dyer, IN to St. Maria Goretti Church (500 Northgate Dr. Dyer, IN 46311) for 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Charles Niblick officiating. Interment Private. Mr. Gartland was a Veteran of the U.S.M.C and a member of I.B.E.W. Local #134 with 55 years of dedicated service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society (17060 Oak Park Ave., Tinley Park, IL 60477) or Hospice of the Calumet Area (600 Superior Ave. Munster, IN 46321) appreciated. My papa - I know it's been awhile since you've been gone, but I've been missing you a lot this week, ever since my mother gave me some of your clothing. I want you to know I'm saving it for ethan. I want you to know ethan and I talk about you quite often, and I promise to keep your memory alive. We will never, ever forget you. You were the best grandfather a girl could ever ask for, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for both showing me what a real man is supposed to act like, and for showing my son the same. I love you, I miss you, and I hope to make you proud of me. I promise I will never let ethan forget you. Thank you for being the man that you were. You always put mom and us before anything else. I couldn't have asked for a better Dad. You were my best friend, the best handyman around, you could fix anything! You will always be my hero and I will miss you so very much!!! My heart just goes out to your entire family...I too come from a family of 5 girls. That alone reserves a special place in heaven for your Dad:)The closeness and togetherness of your family is testament to the parents that raised you. Your Dad must be so proud of his family. May good thoughts and loving memories get you through this terrible time. My deepest sympathies are with all of you...may God bless Mickey.
