Edward E. Jack Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 1, 2005.
A Lutheran minister and military chaplain, Edward E. Jack was a favorite among his shipmates aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard. "Everybody loved him," said his wife, Jean. "He didn't have to go on this trip. He volunteered." Jack, 51, of Detroit, died of a heart attack Jan. 29 on the amphibious assault ship in the waters near Iraq. Before reaching Iraq, Jack's ship was part of the U.S. military's tsunami relief. He served in the Navy for 23 years, with three in the Navy reserves. He was due to retire in June. Navy spokesman Lt. Kyle Raines said Jack was most recently based in San Diego, where he was assigned to Commander Destroyer Squadron Seven. "His role was in comforting the sailors and Marines," said his wife, who noted that her husband also served in the war zone in 2003. "He took it because he liked adventure." Jack also is survived by a daughter, Amanda Roggow, and a son, Todd. "Chaplain Jack exemplified an unwavering commitment to Scripture and to service to the men and women of the sea services," said Cmdr. Mark Steiner, a Lutheran chaplain and a longtime friend of Jack's. "He will be dearly missed."

Todd said he played guitar for 30 min. He is missing you too. He said, "so many things I wish I got to do with him still or for the first time." the same goes for me.

I was told twelve years ago you weren't coming home, but you are home! Someday, I too will come home to be with you!

LT. Jack,

During that fateful deployment on the USS Bonhomie Richard LHD 6 you guided me through a very difficult time in my life. That night you passed away you told me everything was going to be okay.

Well on 1/29/2016 11 years later on the anniversary of your death my 4th child Ryder was born at Tripler Army Medical Center. My spouse gave birth via c-section at 36 weeks due to placenta complications. After the c- section she continued to bleed and the docs took her back into the OR to locate and stop the bleeding, but were unable to so they performed a partial hysterectomy taking only her uterus. During this stressful time that my wife was in the OR the hospital Chaplan came by to see me. His name is Captain Douglas Waite. As me and Captain Waite conversated I mentioned your name and he immediately lit up. It turns out he knew you very well. He says you where a great guy and he misses you dearly. We prayed together and he shared a story about you helping him one time when his personal belongings got burnt up in a arson fire.

Over the years I must admit I've forgotten the date you passed, but not what you've done for me. I can only imagine that it was only fate that my son be born on this date. I believe you were again looking out for me and my family this time from heaven. My wife made it through surgery and is peacefully resting at the moment.

I also have progressed in my career and made Chief Petty Officer from the third class ranking I was at the time of your death.

I am greatful for your love and guidance Rest in peace shipmate this Sailor has the Watch!

Faith-filled always, intense, loved, sweet, clueless, shined in God's wondrous grace, sometimes preachy, charming, loved music, loved God and his family, friends and stuff. loved and needed and missed everyday so very much.
Showed an amazing loving christian example of what creating a life is, not so perfect, not really what you expect, but if you lead with your heart you know family and love is the greatest thing.

I attended high school with Ed and only recently (at a class reunion) learned of his death. I clearly recall he and another student doing an outstanding rendition of "Solitary Man" by Neil Diamond, at a high school talent show. He was a excellent young man and obviously an exceptional adult. My condolences to his family. He clearly made a difference in the lives of others.

I was just playing my guitar and thought about all the evenings Ed and I would play and sing together. Especially at Christmas time when we would travel to reunite. He and I exchanged so many albums, CD's and homemade compilations as gifts over the years.

To the guests Legacy, please enjoy your Christmas and play some music. It lifts your heart and makes very fond memories.

God Bless You ALL.

How sad that I read of the death of this fine man, and yet how wonderful that those of us not fortunate enough to know him in his lifetime can share some of the special memories of those who did.
A bare two years after he died I hope that those who love him best are finding peace and understanding.

Rest in peace Lt. Cmdr. Edward E. Jack.

As Christmas approaches, I am reflecting on the abundant memories of Ed and our experiences as brothers. In childhood, as teens and further on into adult life we always enjoyed being together. So often we spent the holidays worshiping and then having festive gatherings. Of course, games and guitars would always involved. I miss his direct yet compassionate leadership as a my Pastor and brother. His sermons and prayers were so natural and relevant. At home, Ed was "Mr. Excitement" and loved to have fun.

To those of you who admired him professionally or as a friend I thank you. He deserved our respect and love.

To Jean, Amanda, and Todd you are in my prayers and I reach out to comfort and support you. Merry Christmas to ALL.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To All Parents
“I’ll lend you for a little time a child of Mine,” He said.
“For you to love the While he lives and mourn for when he’s dead.
It may be six or seven years, or 22 or three,
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief.
You’ll have his lovely memories as solace and relief.
“I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are some lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to take him back again?”
For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we’ll run.
We’ll shelter him with tenderness, we’ll love him while we may
And for the happiness we’ve known forever grateful stay;
But shall the angels call for him much sooner than we’ve planned.
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.”

What a sad discovery today... I just learned of the passing of Chaplain Jack... I had the pleasure of knowing him while we were both stationed at Pearl Harbor (he, at the Naval Station Chapel, and I, aboard a ship). Many times I had the pleasure of carrying on conversation with him. I'm sure we will all miss him dearly. May God bless his family with Grace and Compassion.

Lt.Cmdr Jack and I were stationed together aboard the USS Port Royal CG-73 in the 90's. He was an inspiration for all of us plankowners and brought all of our morale up in some heavy seas and challenging times. We were better sailors, men and women because of his devout, unselfish, happy natured and truly sincere way. Shipmates are remembered for many things and Chaplain Jack's contributions are endless, truly impacting all he met and giving us the best mentoring, lighter side and positive outlook. I am saddened to know he has passed. but know that his legacy of whom he was and what he accomplished will carry on with me forever. God bless you all and know he was like a father, brother and best friend to us shipmates.
