Helen M. Fink of Hanover Township died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at Mercy Center, Dallas, after having lived for 99 years.
Born on Sept. 2, 1917, in Ashley to Oscar and Bertha Craver Flickinger, Helen at a young age, after graduating from Ashley High School, struck out to earn independence and make the first of many life marks. She became a domestic, an upstairs maid for the Slattery family of Wilkes-Barre and Glen Summit. Working for a period of time, Helen put her earnings aside and decided a second life mark a career - The Bradford Beauty Academy and upon graduating she worked in several salons in the Wyoming Valley.
Helen in her day was a "short" spunky looker who enjoyed a keen social life. It was during this period she met Leonard. They married and together they continued her life marks with the birth of a son, Dwight, who until his sudden death was her pride and joy. Helen didn't falter upon losing Leonard and Dwight, she continued on in her cosmetology business and because of the pride she took in Dwight's achievements, his education and passion for teaching. Dwight in turn gifted Helen her beloved lake house, another life mark which she loved and shared with family and friends.
Helen passed but she left other life marks. Her membership in the Order of Eastern Star, Nanticoke Chapter 174, her time as President of Irem Shriners Womens' Auxiliary and her special project of the collection of teddy bears for the children of the Shriners' Hospital in Philadelphia.
In addition to her husband and son, she was preceded in death by sisters, Dorthea Karchin and Marion Sterling.
Surviving is her sister, Erma Pedata and Al Correa as well as several nieces and nephews. Helen will be missed by her many friends, most especially Sue Pons and Cathy Burgess who lovingly cared for her in the years, months and days of her final life journey.
Respective to her wishes a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Zanicky, her pastor, officiating.
Private interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.
