Frederick J. Karl, 80, of Hanover Township, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, in Gesinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center surrounded by his close family.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre and was the son of the late Fred and Anna Karl.
Fred was a graduate of Hanover High School, Class of 1953, and graduated from King's College, Class of 1957, with Bachelor of Science degrees in biology and chemistry.
The Pennsylvania State Department of Environmental Resources employed him, where he spent his entire working career of 42 years. He held the title of solid waste director at the time of his well-deserved retirement.
Throughout his working career, he achieved many accolades and accumulated honors with the U.S. Public Health Services Department and National Center for Urban Industrial Health, to name a few. In addition, Fred had teaching affiliations as a training course guest lecturer with Penn State University, University of Kentucky and Wilkes College (now University). Further to that, he taught continuing education courses to municipal officials from the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Economic Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania and Wilkes-Barre Jaycees.
Other professional affiliations were past president of the NE Chapter of the PA Environmental Health Association; member of the National Environmental Health Association; member of the American Institute of Planners; and was a registered environmental health sanitarian. Committees served on were Tocks Island Solid Waste Management and Technical Advisory Committee; PA Land Restoration Task Force; technical advisor of the Luzerne/Lackawanna Environmental Committee; Publications Committee of the PA Environmental Health Association; and the Solid Waste Management Committee of NEPA, Hanover Township Environmental Council and served as president of the Bishop Hoban Parents Club for a time while his children attended high school.
In addition to his time spent with the state of Pennsylvania, Fred worked side-by-side with his father and brother-in-law, Peter Valania, at Karl Oil, the family gas station and service center in Hanover Township.
Fred was a member of the former St. Casmir's Church in the Lyndwood section of Hanover Township and a life member of AMVETS Post 59.
A loving husband to his wife, Sandra Karl (Hinkle), they recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. A devoted father to his children, Patti (husband, Bill Zaleppa, and their three daughters, Paige, Abigail and Sarah); son, Fred (his wife, Lisa); daughter, Yvonne (husband, Marcus Lingenfelter, and their son, Steffen); and son, Gregg (his wife, Elizabeth, and their son, Keelan); daughter-in-law, Mary McKenna; and daughter, Dr. Cailin Frank, DO. Additional surviving family members are his sister, Delores Valania (her husband, Peter, their son, Peter, his wife, Tracy, and their three sons, Erich, Zachary and Ryan).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anna; son, Kevin Theodore Karl; and niece, Ann Marie Valania.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Ave., Wilkes-Barre. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Jeffrey Tudgay, assistant pastor of St. Jude's Church, Mountain Top. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Fred's biographical account is an indication of how great this man was. He never neglected anyone or anything he was associated with and remained extremely dedicated and loyal to his family, profession, all his organizations, colleagues and friends.
