Thomas W. Dombroski, 86, of Trucksville, died and his soul went to heaven Wednesday, May 17, 2017, surrounded by his four children.
Born in Luzerne, he was the youngest of nine children of the late John and Josephine Gronski Dombroski. He graduated from Luzerne High School in 1948.
Thomas was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1951 after training in Fort Hood, Texas. He honorably served his country on the front lines of the Korean conflict with the 5th Regiment as a supply sergeant. For his distinguished service, Thomas earned and was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Medal, Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman Badge.
Upon his honorable discharge, Thomas attended King's College under the G.I. Bill, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He later completed graduate work at Wilkes College.
Thomas married the love of his life, Nancy Jane Mills Dombroski, with whom he had shared 53 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2009. Early on in their marriage, they moved to Wysox, where Tom was a senior process/chemical engineer with the Sylvania electric division in Towanda for 10 years. Thomas and Nancy were blessed with four children, Joyce, Thomas Jr., Ronald and Susan.
Upon relocating to the Wyoming Valley, Thomas participated in various major industrial development projects in Northeast Pennsylvania, including the North Cross Valley Expressway and as chairman of the Wyoming Valley Flood Protection Committee, which later led to the authority responsible for the raising of the levee system. He was a successful independent businessman for 50 years but enjoyed financial and management consulting the most. Thomas authored two books, "Creative Problem Solving" and "How America was Financed."
He formerly was an elected zoning officer in Bradford County. He was a member of the King's College Century Club of Alumni, King's College Chorus, Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce and was chairman of the board of directors of Citizens Against Property Taxes (CAPTAXES) in Luzerne County. He was an advocate of House Bill 76 to eliminate property taxes for senior citizens and a sales tax only to fund Pennsylvania schools. He was an inspector of elections in Kingston Twp. for the last several years.
Thomas was a regular attendee and participant at the Dallas School Board, Kingston Twp. and Luzerne County Commissioner and later Luzerne County Council meetings, as a watchdog against taxpayer waste and corruption. The stop-arms, stop signs and strobe lights on Dallas School District buses as well as other local school districts for the safety of all students are there because of Mr. Dombroski's advocacy.
Thomas was a dedicated member of Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Towanda, where he served as an usher and, for the past 51 years, he was a dedicated member of St. Therese's Church, Shavertown, where he was an usher, as well as the longest serving president of the Holy Name Society in the Diocese of Scranton.
Thomas was a proud man who loved his family dearly, and enjoyed spending time with them. He helped thousands of people, from someone he may have just met to those he knew many years. He enjoyed cooking, tinkering with minor repairs and especially enjoyed attending Dallas High School football games, yelling from the sideline fence telling the coach the proper plays to call and encouraging players.
Thomas is survived by his children, Joyce Dombroski-Gebhardt, Thomas Jr., Ronald and Sue Dombroski Irvin; by his grandchildren, Jackie Gebhardt, Brittany Gebhardt, Bobby Gebhardt and wife, Jocelyn, Caylee Irvin and Joey Irvin; great-grandson, Connor; brother, John M. Dombroski, Summerfield, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Nancy, Thomas was preceded in death by his brothers, Alex, Frank, Edward and Michael, and sisters, Alice (Elsie), Bertha and Edna.
A celebration of Thomas' life will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Therese's Church, 64 Davis St., Shavertown.
Interment with military honors will be held in Mount Greenwood Cemetery, Shavertown.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dombroski Family Scholarship Fund at King's College, Office of Financial Aid, 133 N. River St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711. This scholarship was established by Tom to assist deserving undergraduate students to achieve his or her collegiate dream.

We are very sorry about the loss of your Dad, as we all loved him. We have many fond memories of our visits over many years. He was such a consider and kind-hearted man, who was always trying to help us when we needed an issue resolved.
However, as many others as he helped, He was never at a loss for words regarding his love for his beautiful children and family, who he was extremely proud of all their accomplishments as well.
He will be missed greatly, and our only comfort is knowing He's now with Jesus, his predeceased loved ones, and that we'll all be reunited together one day.
May our Lord comfort you all, and bring you peace & strength during this difficult time.
We love you all. Xxoo
