Mary Loftus Martin

Mary Loftus Martin, 74, of Centerville, Mass., died Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Tufts Medical Center, Boston.

She was an eight-year survivor of a lung transplant that was performed at Duke University Hospital in 2015. Her health had been declining for the past two months due to complications from her lungs and kidney failure. Mary died after there were no more treatment options available and life saving measures were stopped. Her husband and beloved brother were by her side as she slipped from this life to her new address in heaven.

Born and raised in Pittston, the daughter of the late Robert and Rita Shea Loftus, Mary was a graduate of St. Ann Academy, Marywood University and completed course work for her master's degree in education at Penn State University. For 10 years she taught English and American literature at the Pittston Area High School. She moved to Boston and took courses in hotel management and joined the Parker House, where she became the coordinator of VIP hospitality, a job that put her in contact with many famous people. Subsequently, she worked for several Boston employment firms until she found her niche at Kforce as vice president of their financial and insurance division, where she built her practice to a very successful level and became a leader nationwide in her field. She went on to open her own consulting firm, Lofty Consulting, in 2002, which she chose to put on hold to assist her parents as their health declined and they required her care and support in Pittston.

In 2003, Mary met the love of her life, Robert Emmett Martin, and they were married in St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis. After a wonderful honeymoon in Hawaii, Bob and Mary made their permanent home in Centerville. There were many wonderful beach days and sunsets followed by dinners at the Hyannis Yacht Club which was one of her favorite places and where she made many friends who supported her through difficult times. Mary was an ardent and expert skier spending a great amount of time at Killington Mountain in Vermont and she reached the highest level of proficiency in pilates. She also studied television broadcasting and showed remarkable ability and talent in that growing field.

Mary is survived by her husband of 20 years, Robert Emmett Martin; brother, Bobby Loftus and his wife, Kathryn, Alexandria, Va.; and nephews, Peter Loftus and his wife, Lauren, Chicago, Ill.; and Matt Loftus and his wife, Erin, Seattle, Wash.

We would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and support staff at Duke University Hospital during the time of Mary's lung transplant, specifically her surgeon, Dr. Jack Haney, and her pulmonologists, Dr. Omar Mohamedaly and Dr. John Reynolds. In addition, our thanks go out to the emergency room doctors and nurses for taking such good care of Mary as well as the medical staff at the Spaulding Rehab Hospital in Sandwich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William St., Pittston. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
