What is ObitFinder?
ObitFinder™ is updated daily and searches obituaries from more than 900 national & international newspapers and the U.S. Social Security Death Index to provide the most accurate and timely obituary information available. What is the Social Security Death Index?
Created in 1980 as a requirement of the Freedom of Information Act, this official government database (also known as the Death Master File) contains approximately 70 million records. Social Security Death Index (SSDI) data used on this site dates back to January 1, 1937, and is updated weekly. Search results display date of birth, date of death, zip code, and town and state of last known residence. Please note that keyword search is not available for the SSDI data.

How can I view an archived obituary?
Type the deceased's first and last names in the search boxes and click "Search." This will lead you to a list of the people on our site sharing the deceased's name. If you see red text reading "Archived Notice" below an obituary, it can be activated with ObitFinder. Click on the highlighted name of the person you are looking for, and you will receive an archive activation order form. You can activate the obituary for a small fee. If a Guest Book or photo were included with the obituary, they will also be activated.

How can I tell how long the obituary is?
Below the brief text that appears on the archive activation order form, you will see an indication of the length of the obituary (e.g. 105 total words). In some cases, only a brief death notice has been published rather than a full-length obituary. If the total word count of the listing is less than 24 words, you will not receive any additional obituary information by activating it.

How can I access the obituary after I have activated it?
After you enter your credit card information into the archive activation form, you will receive a page that provides a link to the obituary. You must use this link to access the obituary. We recommend you save this link for your records in case you wish to view the obituary again before the link expires.
