Kathleen Simpson Obituary

GLOUCESTER POINT - Kathleen Charlotte 'Kappy' Irwin Simpson, devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, faithful friend and 35-year resident of Gloucester Point and Williamsburg, Va., passed away after a brief illness on Aug. 12, 2008, at Williamsburg Sentara Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 18, 1921, to William and Charlotte Irwin of San Francisco, Calif., Kappy served as a WAVE for three years in the U.S. Navy during WW II. After WW II, Kappy graduated from the University of California School of Nursing and in 1948 married the love of her life, William A. 'Bill' Simpson, pilot, COL, USMC, RET (UVA Grad 1935). After the Marine Corps, Bill pursued a career with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and they established a small farm in Gunston Hall, Va.
Upon retirement from the FAA, Kappy and Bill 'retired' to Gloucester Point, Va., in 1974. Kappy dearly loved and was grateful for the 'water' in general and the York River in particular, for all the peace and views that it provided to everyone, on any given day.
Kappy loved people, her gardens and ideas – all of which she nurtured throughout her life. Kappy's zest for life, kindness and genuine interest in the well being of her friends and fellow-man brought an abundance of joy to all who knew her. Throughout her life she supported and/or belonged to numerous civic organizations including the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, Severn Republican Women's Club, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Ware River Circle King's Daughters and the Kingsmill Women's Club.
Kappy was preceded in death by Bill in 1983, and her sister, Dorothy Jean Irwin Bray, in 1996.
Kappy is survived by a daughter, Sandra Lee Simpson Geiger and her husband, Buzz; two grandchildren, Christine Quinlan and Ben Geiger; and her 'best little buddy and confidant,' great-granddaughter, Charlotte Lee 'Charlie' Quinlan.
Funeral services, officiated by The Rev. Daniel O. Worthington Jr., will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment for Kappy will be 2 p.m. Sept. 25, in Arlington National Cemetery, beside her beloved husband, Bill.
In Kappy's memory, contributions may be made to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, 601 Children's Way, Norfolk, VA 23507, for all the little folks who need your help. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
