Audrey Markham Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Audrey Parker Markham peacefully answered the Lord's calling at 2:50 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at the timely and exact end of Psalm 23 as delivered to us by Chaplain Paul Bemers at Riverside Medical Center.
The daughter of Claude and Nellie Parker of Seaford, Audrey was born on Dec. 26, 1922, in the town of East Hampton. She graduated from Poquoson High School and went on to graduate with honors from Elizabeth Buxton Nursing School in Newport News. She was also a member of the Elizabeth Buxton Alumni Association. Audrey became a Registered Nurse and worked in this capacity for more than 50 years. She started her career as an Operating Room Surgical Nurse, becoming highly proficient in this capacity. She later did a period of private duty nursing while raising her only child, Claudia. Eventually she enhanced her career at Riverside Regional Medical Center while working for many years on the surgical floor. She retired from service and was subsequently recalled to work on the IV Team at Riverside. She eventually retired for good and then signed up for a period of volunteer work in the IV Team and Pastoral Department.
Audrey was preceded in death by her true and beloved husband, Vernon B. Markham Jr. Audrey and 'Bernie' were lifetime members of the Second Presbyterian Church in Newport News.
She is survived by her daughter, Claudia Markham Rader of Newport News. She will be especially remembered by Claudia's fiancE, Raymond W. Wright of Hampton, who so lovingly referred to Audrey as 'Mama.' She will also be lovingly and dearly remembered by her older sister, Estelle Groff; Estelle's sons, Talmadge Huckabee, his wife, Jeanie, and their son, Michael Huckabee; and Keith Huckabee, his wife, Bridget, and their two sons. She will also be remembered by her cousins, Edith Lee and Mr. and Mrs. Faye Moore. She will be especially remembered by her sister-in-law, Ms. Peggy Hales, and husband, Leon Douglas Hales, and their son, Rodney Neeley Jr. She was a true 'Angel of Mercy' who will be sadly missed by her many, many friends and loved ones.
The family wishes to thank most sincerely the staff of the Riverside Regional Medical Center, the Riverside Rehabilitation Center, and the Gardens of Warwick Forest, the medical facilities that supported us during these trying times.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Peninsula Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Riverside Regional Medical Center's School of Health Careers Scholarship Fund, a truly noble cause: Riverside Health System Foundation, Attn: Debbie Atkinson, 701 Town Center Drive, Suite 1000, Newport News, VA 23606. Please make checks payable to Riverside Health System Foundation.

Dear Claudia,
As you already know, your mother was one of the best bedside nurses at RRMC. I had the priviledge of working with her and knowing her in the Riverside family for many years. If I were sick, I wanted your Mom to care for me or members of my family. I know God has her still taking care of others. My Deepest Sympathy to you and your family.

Dear Claudia, As I read the many remarks that were displayed on this guestbook about Mom I couldn't help but think that Mom would have downplayed all of the wonderful and true words said about her because she was a Humble and dignified Lady who cared deeply about her patients more then her own self at times. As a Transportation Escort at Riverside Regional Medical Center I saw your Mom complete tasks asked of her in a timely and efficient manner but with compassion as well which was a true gift that she had. I got to know your Dad and saw the devotion that both you and your Mom extended toward him and both of them will be sorely missed but please know through the dozens of positive testimonies that your folks have left you and the grandchildren a fabulous legacy. May She rest in Peace along with your Dad. Ed Olshansky

I will always remember my friend Audry as one of the best Nurses of my time, she was always there to give a helping hand to me, taught me so much . she new just what to do in any given emergency. Her first love other than family was her patient and she gave them her all. She was respected by co-workers for her knowledge and also by the Doctors. She was my friend and I shall always miss her, no one can ever be more devoted to Nursing as my friend Audry was. God Bless her and may her loving sprit watch over us who knew and loved her. My prayers are with you
Claudia and your family.

Claudia, I will always remember you having the children call your mom to wish her a happy birthday or to sing her a song. It was also great all the times she visited the center to attend a party, read the children a story, or do an activity with them. She will be truly missed.

Dear Claudia
Sorry to hear about the loss your mom. She was there as a nurse when my dad was dying @RRMC. She was so caring. I came back in 1982 to work @ RRMC and saw her as a very cheerful and repected nurse. She was a great person.

Dear Estelle, Claudia and Family,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Audrey, Claudia you do not know me, I grew up in Seaford and have known your Mother and Estelle all my life. My Mother ,Mary Virginia grew up with Estelle and your Mother, she has since passed away.

I always will have this memory of Audrey, I am an RN and was working at Riverside on the Surgery floor and low and behold who should show up for work but your Mother, she had been out of nursing for years and was scared to death, we had some good times working together until took another job and she went on to become a fixture at Riverside. I can still hear her laugh and she was so fun loving----- there will never be another Audrey as I am sure you know.

Estelle, I am so sorry for your loss of your sister, and I pray God will take good care of you and I will continue seeing you at church. You know I love you bunches.

My prayers are with you all,

Joanne Wainwright Miller
