Robert Johnson Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Robert William Johnson, 81, of Williamsburg, died Aug. 20, 2008, at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.
He was born and raised in Seattle, Wash., in 1926 and graduated with honors from Lincoln High School in Seattle. He received a B.S. degree from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949, where he was also editor of the university's student newspaper. He continued at Carnegie, earning a graduate degree in Industrial Administration in 1951. His college years were interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
He began his career as a Certified Public Accountant at Touche, Ross, Bailey & Smart before joining Teledyne Corporation as Treasurer. Subsequently, he was Vice President of Sales and Finance for M&M Mars Candies, and later as Vice President and Treasurer at Heede International.
In 1983, he purchased and operated the Pine Crest Inn in Tryon, N.C., until 1990. After a brief retirement, he worked as a corporate consultant for Rummler-Brache.
He used his background in corporate finance to volunteer as treasurer for several non-profit organizations, including most recently, This Century Art Gallery in Williamsburg.
Bob loved music and sang in the choir at Jamestown Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Dukes of Gloucester barbershop group.
In addition to his love of family and enthusiasm for wine, food, and travel, his optimism, intelligence, and integrity were inspirations to all who knew him.
Bob is survived by his wife, Diane; sister, Kathy Keehn; children, Susan Johnson, Erick Johnson, and Christopher Johnson; four stepchildren, Elizabeth Shell, Thomas Llanso, Theodore Llanso, and Amy Llanso; and 10 grandchildren.
His first wife, Helene Crow Johnson, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Jamestown Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. A reception with refreshments will follow.
A private burial will be held at Williamsburg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bob's name to This Century Art Gallery Building Fund at P.O. Box 388, Williamsburg, VA 23187.
