Dear Grandpa,
A few weeks ago I was out providing over watch, over a small Iraqi village as it was being searched. A child was playing kick ball with an older man. As the search team made their way trough the village, and past them, they just kept playing. It made me stop and think about how powerful, life lessons are taught in the simplest of moments. I feel that you and grandma have set a standard by which I could learn from. It never mattered what was going on in our lives, or how far apart we were from each other. I always felt that you guys were there to kick the ball back to me, with a card, or a letter or, a phone call. The love that you and grandma shared for each other and for your family is a testament to the quality of people that you were. I have so many fond memories of spending time with you guys, building TPs in the back yard, going on camping trips, or just sitting around the table and listening to stories. I hope you guys know that those stories didn’t fall on young deaf ears. I learned so much about how important family is, and about the joy, and fulfillment, that could be found in being in love with a spouse for a life time. You gave me a great father, who loves God and his family. I am happy that you got to meet baby mike, and got to play with all of your great grand children. They loved spending time with their papa, and sneaking candy off the end table. I wish that I could have come home to see you, but I know you missed grandma and were ready to see her again. So I will miss you and grandma and all the love we shared. I will remember to love my family, be proud of serving my country, and enjoy all the adventures of life.
Love your grandson,
Josh
p.s. Don’t forget to tell grandma about how beautiful Amie is, and if she could send me some tips I probably could use them. Oh one last thing, maybe you could talk to God and see about working out a Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers Super Bowl. That would be fun. Thanks Grandpa, I love you.

To the John Barder Family,
I had the pleasure of working with John at the shipyard. What a gentleman and a gentle man. I have always had a great respect for him and always will. May God bless you in this difficult time.
