Hyman Bernstein Obituary

HAMPTON - After a long struggle with Multiple Sclerosis, Hyman "Bernie" Bernstein, 64, passed away on Friday, Aug. 29, 2008.
Born in Montreal, Canada, on March 28, 1944, to the late Abraham Bernstein and Pauline Bernstein Cohen, Bernie had been a resident of Hampton for the past 20 years.
While attending UCLA, Bernie was drafted into the United States Army, where he served at Fort Myer in Arlington, Va., as part of the 3rd Infantry Regiment Old Guard. Upon completion of his service, he attended George Washington University, where he studied economics.
Bernie spent most of his career with Cellar Door Productions as a concert promoter. After starting out in the Washington D.C. office, he was promoted to President of the Virginia Beach office, which he helped establish. After much success there, he was asked to establish offices in Detroit, Mich., and Columbia, S.C. In 1988, Bernie left Cellar Door and began working as the Assistant Director of the Hampton Coliseum. He spent the rest of his career at the Coliseum, and retired in 1992.
Bernie is survived by is wife, Catherine Tatspaugh Bernstein; his daughter, Abigail Jackson; and his son-in-law, Brant Jackson.
The Bernstein family would like to thank everyone who helped Bernie during his final days. The care and compassion he received will always be appreciated.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Downtown Hampton. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
