Ozella Whitehead Obituary

HAMPTON - Mrs. Ozella H. Whitehead, an angel on earth, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, Sept. 8,2008, at Sentara Careplex Hospital in Hampton, Va.
She, the oldest of eleven children, was born in Halifax County, N.C., to the late Macco and Mary Buford Harper on Jan. 15, 1927.
Mrs. Whitehead loved the Lord and His Word. One of her many favorite Bible verses was Psalms 23: "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…" She also loved to hear and sing religious songs. Mrs. Whitehead served as an usher at Fountain Baptist Church and a deaconess at Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Temple. She enjoyed being involved in a seniors group called "Dream Makers" in which they went on trips and hosted a variety of activities at the church in order to serve the Lord. Mrs. Whitehead devoted her life to God and her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Macco and Mary Buford Harper; husband, Berry C. Whitehead; son, Berry C. Whitehead Jr.; brothers, Macco Harper Jr. and Donald Harper; sisters, Geraldine Holmes and Willie Mae Alston.
Mrs. Whitehead leaves to cherish her precious memories to her loving children, Harry Whitehead (Edwadine), Stanley Whitehead, Phyllis Morgan (Bernard), and Vincent Whitehead ( Annette); seven grandchildren, three brothers, three sisters, and a host of nieces and nephews.
She will be sadly missed by her family and friends!
Viewing will be held from noon to 7 p.m. today at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel 1601-27th St. NN, VA 23607 (757) 380-0251. A homegoing celebration will be held 11 a.m. Friday Sept. 12, at the Six House 2003 Kecoughtan Road, Hampton. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at 708 Kentucky Avenue, Hampton. A special thanks is extended to Coliseum Park Nursing Home and Sentara Careplex for the care and concern of our dear mother. To the Family - Heaven was definitely missing an Angel when I met Miss Ozella many years ago. She was one of the nicest people I've ever met since we moved to Newport News over 20 years ago. At church, she always greeted me with a warm and loving hug. She will be missed but I know that God will hold the family in His arms and heal the sorrow you feel.

Whitehead Family (Vincent and Phyllis),
I didn't know your mother well, just my brief moments of pleasantries as she passed through Be-lo's (early eighties employee). I don't know your loss, but I know the love of a mother. I pray this time brings your family closer together and the love of God sustains you during this season. I haven't seen either of you in years, so I hope memory of me kicks in. May God bless and keep you.
