Robert Oglesby Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Robert "Bob" Sterrett Oglesby, 86, died peacefully at home Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008.
Born in Lynchburg, Va., he spent his school years in Lynchburg and many happy summers with the Thurmond side of the family in Rockfish in Nelson County. He resided on the Peninsula for 41 years. He was a graduate of the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Apprentice School and North Carolina State University. He received his MBA from the University of Chicago while working for U.S. Steel in Gary, Indiana as an Industrial Engineer. He was a founding member of the Northwest Indiana American Institute of Industrial Engineers. Bob came back to Newport News Shipyard in 1967. He retired from the Industrial Engineering Department in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Navy during the Korean Conflict. In Newport News, he was a founding member of AIIE and also the American Institute of Manufacturing Engineers. He was a member of Hilton Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon and Sunday school superintendent in the 1970's.
Bob was a dedicated family man and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and sharing with them the joy he got from gardening.
Mr. Oglesby is survived by his wife, Lois Regel Oglesby; his son, Bruce R. Oglesby and his wife, Cecilia, of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; his daughter, Lynne E. Oglesby of Newport News; his sister, Doris Cosby of Richmond; his brothers, Allan C. Oglesby of San Diego, Calif., and Ray T. Oglesby of Ithaca, N.Y.; and his three grandchildren, Bella Oglesby Finkel and Sophia and Robert Oglesby.
A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Hilton Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Gary Bagley. Inurnment will take place at Albert G. Horton Veterans Cemetery with immediate family in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hilton Presbyterian Church, 34 Main St., Newport News, VA 23601 or The Nature Conservancy, Attn. Treasurer, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203.

I'm sorry for your loss. I grew up in Newport News and went to school with Bruce and Lynne. Although I'm out of the state now, I still view the Daily Press for news and just wanted to share my sympathy with "old" friends. May God comfort you at this time of sorrow.
