Robert Slayton Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Robert P. 'Roy' Slayton, 86, of Newport News passed away Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008.
Mr. Slayton was a native of Halifax County but a resident of the Peninsula since 1940.
Mr. Slayton retired in 1982, after 42 years of service as a welding supervisor from Newport News Shipbuilding. He was a WWII army veteran. After retirement, Mr. Slayton was known for his love of the outdoors, gardening and fishing. He was a member of Northside Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy B. Slayton.
Mr. Slayton is survived by one daughter, Joan E. Slayton of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, James Slayton of Newport News and Mark A. Slayton and wife, Lisa, of Hampton; one sister, Edith S. Ricker of Newport News; and two grandchildren, Brandon and Heather.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, in Peninsula Memorial Park and officiated by the Rev. Herbert Bowman.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Heartland Hospice, Home Instead; especially Julia and Cherry, and Angel Care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Heartland Hospice 11835 Fishing Point Drive, Suite 101, Newport News, Virginia 23601.
