Thomas Stierhoff Obituary

HAMPTON - Thomas Allen "Tom" Stierhoff, born July 31, 1957, died Sept. 17, 2008.
Tom was born in Towson, Md., to Robert Andrew "Bob" and Helen Elizabeth "Betty" Godey Stierhoff. He earned a B.S. in biology/biochemistry at Evergreen State College and continued with graduate studies in biology/statistics, concentrating in ornithology, at Northern Arizona University. He was a natural resources and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) specialist. He moved to the Peninsula in 1986, working for several local firms and serving as a consultant to the Army for many years. His specialties included NEPA, wetlands, site assessments, threatened and endangered species, water quality and macrobenthic studies, and local, state, and federal natural resource management regulations. He was the author or co-author of many technical reports and plans and worked on projects across the country.
He loved to tend his vegetable garden, watch science fiction movies and political talk shows, do sudoku puzzles, fish and crab, and play with his daughter, Kimberly and teach her about nature.
Tom is survived by his wife of eight years, Pamela Schenian; daughters, Phoebe Elizabeth Stierhoff (19) of Temple Terrace, Fla., and Kimberly Andrea Stierhoff (5) of Hampton; brother, John, of Baltimore; aunts, Jean Godey and Ruth Godey of Towson; other extended family members; and life-long friends, Bob Bieretz and family, Baltimore, Kevin Hutton, Baltimore, and Jay Stanley, Eagle River, Alaska.
Tom did not like being the center of attention and had no religious affiliation. In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered in the Chesapeake Bay, where he enjoyed spending many hours boating and fishing. No formal memorial service is planned, at his request.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA; Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula, Newport News; or to Kimberly's 529A education fund: Acct. 82781061, Attn: John Holt, Saunders/Holt Investment Consulting Group, 34 E. Queens Way, Hampton, VA 23669, with checks payable to "College America."
Arrangements are by Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions in Hampton, 757-825-8070. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
