Audrey Marie Smith Topping

POQUOSON - Audrey Marie Smith Topping, 94, a native and lifelong resident of Poquoson, passed away Sept. 25, 2008, at Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News.
Mrs. Topping graduated from Longwood University with a teaching degree. She began her career in teaching in the two-room schoolhouse called 'The Emmaus School' of Yorktown for grades 4th through 7th, and later in the Poquoson Elementary School. After retiring from teaching she helped run the Jeff's Post Office and Grocery Store in Poquoson. She was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Topping was preceded in death by her husband, Dowell Topping; parents, Emily and Wallie Smith; and a son, Jimmy Topping.
She is survived by her sister, Emily 'June' Smith Lacks; three nephews, Lawrence Carter 'Larry' Lacks II, 'Wallie' Gatewood Lacks Sr., and 'Mark' Stephen Lacks; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home and other times at her home. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home by the Rev. Milford C. Rollins. Burial will follow at Smith Cemetery, Poquoson.
