Juanita Scott Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Juanita Mae Hamlet Scott departed this life at the home of her daughter on Sept. 26, 2008.
She was a native and lifetime resident of Newport News. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Elisha Hamlet and the late Emma Hamlet Jones. She was a dedicated member of Trinity Baptist Church in Newport News for 83 years.
Juanita graduated from Huntington High School in 1932. She received a B.A. degree from Virginia Union University and a M.S. degree in Special Education for the Deaf from Gallaudet College, Washington, D.C. She furthered her studies at Virginia State University, Petersburg, Va., Northwestern University, Evanston, ILL., and Central Institute for the Deaf, St. Louis, Mo. She was a licensed Audiologist.
Her professional experiences included teaching elementary school in Lynchburg and Newport News and at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Hampton. After retirement, she taught at Hampton Institute (University).
In the 1940's, she founded and directed the first Children's Theatre on the peninsula. She also authored a volume of inspirational poetry. Some have been published nationally.
She was predeceased in death by her husband of 48 years, Henry Milton Scott; her parents, siblings; stepfather, Newton W. Jones; sons-in-law, Joseph A. Spencer Jr., and the Reverend Maurice C. Carter Sr.; and stepgrandson, Lt. Col. (Ret) Don C. Carter.
She is survived by her daughter, Joyce S. Carter; grandsons, Kevin V. Spencer (Deveda) and Jeffrey R. Spencer; six great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., burial service will be held at 5:45 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 1, at O.H. Smith and Son Funeral Home. The Celebration of Mrs. Scott's Life will begin at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home and will continue at noon Thursday, Oct. 2, at Trinity Baptist Church, 2900 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News. Viewing will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Family and friends are asked to assemble at 931 Shore Drive by 11a.m. on Thursday for the procession to the church.

Mrs. Joyce Carter and family,

Thinking of you during this painfull time. Your Mom was an educated, lovely, and gracious lady. I don't know if Her name will ever be in history books, but the many lives she touched and influenced made a wonderful difference. She was truely a part of her time.
