Barbara Wood Obituary

WEST POINT - Barbara Baker Wood, 86, passed away Sept. 30, 2008.
She was born June 15, 1922, in Cambridge, Mass., and was raised in Wollaston. She graduated from Thayer Academy in Braintree, Mass., in 1940, and subsequently attended Boston University. Barbara married Robert Harding Wood of Newton, Mass., in 1942. During World War II, she worked as a secretary for the United Seaman's Service in Boston.
After residing in Hingham, Mass., she moved with her husband and then seven children to Falls Church, Va. In 1972, the family moved to White Stone, Va., where she attended St. Francis deSales Catholic Church, where she was a devoted member, volunteer, and long-time Director of Religious Education.
In 1990, she and her now-retired husband moved to West Point, Va., where she was an active member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert H. Wood, and her daughter, Susan L. McCaw of New York City.
She is survived by her children, Robert H. Wood Jr. of Virginia Beach, Thomas F. Wood of Staunton, Derek Mathis (formerly Dana W. Wood) of Williamsburg, Lawrence G. Wood of West Point, Clare M. Sweet of Key West, Fla., Benjamin D. M. Wood of Alexandria, Va., and Caroline M. Stelter of West Point. Additionally, she is survived by two sons-in-law, four daughters-in-law, 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street in West Point on Sunday, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a Christian Vigil beginning at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
