Patrick McKinley Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Patrick Wyatt McKinley, 18 years old, was unexpectedly launched into a higher purpose, in front of his house, while fighting evil. He graduated from Denbigh High School in 2003, and had just completed his first semester at his beloved school, the Ringling School of Art and Design, in Sarasota, Fla. While pledging for Phi Delta Theta, he completed countless hours of community service and was well known as a remarkable conscientious and dedicated student. He had made the President's List with a 3.2 GPA. Well known for his wide smile, bright eyes and wholehearted laughs, Patrick enjoyed life, loved everyone and shared his enthusiasm and optimism with an ever-growing circle of peers, old friends, new friends and was the light that shined in his family. Patrick cared for everyone, making bright even the darkest of days, and his comforting support could be counted on whenever it was needed. He was romantic, idealistic, an enjoyer of fantasy, and very spiritual. His works of art were absolutely brilliant and the love he held for his family and friends was unparalleled. Patrick is survived by his devoted mother and father, Jeanette and David Richardson, his beloved younger brothers, Hayden and Jake, his aunt and uncle, Sandra and Will Richards, and his treasured maternal grandparents, 'Nana' and 'Bandaddy,' Muriel Haynes Malave and Col. (Ret.) Samuel Malave-Garcia. He is also survived by his loving paternal grandparents, John and Peggy Richardson and by his aunt, Kathy Paul. He is also survived by his biological father, James McKinley, Patrick's sister, Kaylan McKinley, his uncles, Patrick (his namesake) and Matthew McKinley, and his paternal grandmother, Kathleen A. Cavanaugh. His uncle, Wyatt L. Malave, preceded him in death. A celebration of Patrick's life will take place in Woodside High School on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 7 to 9 p.m. The celebration will continue with a gathering at the Beechwood Club House afterward. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Muriel Malave' FBO Patrick W. McKinley Account # 3000061692111 at Wachovia Bank. Funds will be used to establish a scholarship in Patrick's name at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla., and to support efforts to ban all firearms in the United States of America. Patrick maintained a website that contains many of his works and views on life. This site can be visited at http://webspace.ringling.edu.

To Patrick's Family:

I too am sharing your pain. Your son was an incredible person, who loved life and everything in it. I didn't really know him that well, but what little I did, I was glad to. *RIP Patrick McKinley* You will never be forgotten. May God watch over you and your family.

Patrick was a guy that always had a smile on his face. Everytime you saw him in the hallways at school he had that handsome smile brightly displayed on his face. That smile and his awesome personality will be what I remember him by. I know that he is still here with us, in our hearts. I love you Patrick and will always remember you!

I rode the bus with Patrick in both his 9th grade year at DHS and 10th grade year at Woodside. I didn't know him as well as some other people, but he was radiant... always smiling, and when he wasn't, we knew he was about to. Although we don't have him with us in the physical sense, his spirit will always be with us. Remember those eyes, and his smile... the joy that he shared with everyone he came into contact with... Patrick, you will never be forgotten.

To Patrick's family - I share your deep sense of loss and grief. A terrific young man has been taken from us far too soon.

To Patrick - It's said that teachers can - and sometimes do - touch the lives of our students. But every so often a very special student comes along who touches our life. You did that and I will forever be grateful. I shall always remember you.

He only Takes The Best

A heart of gold stopped beating

Two shining eyes at rest;

God broke our heart to prove to us

He only takes the best.

A million times we will need you

A million times we will cry.

If love could have saved you

You never would have died,

It broke our heart to lose you

But you didn't go alone,

For part of us went with you.

The day God took you home.

You were a beautiful, talented young man and will be greatly missed.

Patrick and I were in many classes together throughout high school. We sat next to each other, helped each other when we were feeling down there was never a time when we didnt have fun. Without him I would never have passed spanish, let alone stayed awake. He was a great friend to have and can never be replaced. Patrick was one of my biggest admirers and i will never forget him

Mr and Mrs Richardson,

I knew Patrick for a long time through different things. We worked together, went to school together, and most importantly he was an amazing friend. I miss him so much. I miss the way he would smile ALL the time and his contagious laugh. I still remember the first time I met him I swore up and down that he looked exactly like the guy from the movie "bring it on", he just laughed at me. I could always count on Patrick to be there when I needed him. He never gave up on me even though I could be a terrible friend at times. The last time I saw Patrick he was telling us about school and pledging, somehow his pledge pin had fallen off and he made us stop what we were doing and look for it. He loved school, his friends, art, and most of all his family. He always had a new story to tell about Hayden or Jake. He thought it was hilarious that more girls called the house for Hayden than for him. I remember when Patrick got his Tiburon, it was love at first sight for him. I begged him everyday to let me drive it. One time I had had a really bad day and he came over to my house to hang out with me. He told me that he knew exactly what would make me feel better and he dragged me outside and told me I could drive his car, not on the street though only in a near by school parking lot. He had his eyes closed the whole time! Patrick was an amazing person and he will forever be missed and never forgotten. Im glad I got to know Patrick for the short time that he was here. I only have good memories of Patrick and they will remain in my heart forever.

*I love you and miss you Patrick, RIP*

Hello!!! Patrick, you never really knew me too well in high school at woodside but i certainly knew who you were by your outstanding art work! Your art work would always put smiles on peoples faces and your bright and kind words would get everyone through their tough times. You are truly going to be missed but we know you are in God's hands now. God bless your family and friends through this tough time, none of it is easy. Bless this family for they just want some answers. Give them support to get through this grueling period and to know that he may be physically gone but he will always be here, wherever you see a smile!! I'm truly sorry, for he was an outstanding child with great talent! It was well used and he made a great impact. God Bless

Patrick was really a good friend to everyone. We are all going to miss him, and the good times we all spent together. Patrick knew how to always make me smile, and he loved to make everyone laugh. He was a great artist and we will cherish those drawings forever. Patrick was genuine, and had a big heart... I am really going to miss him a lot.

I would like to express my sincerest condolences to Patrick's
family and friends. I met Patrick the first day at Ringling when my son, Eric, and he found each other. Just seeing him made my son feel at home and they spent most of their free time together. I found this sketch of Patrick in Eric's sketchbook with the word "Pat-Tastic" next to it. That explains his feelings in a word. He will be greatly missed.

To the Family of Patrick McKinley-

I had the pleasure and the opportunity to be Patrick's Yearbook Teacher last year and I have wonderful memories of his smiles, laughs, and many jokes. His smile and memory will always hold a special place in my heart. He was a talented young man who created many wonderful pieces of art and layouts for the Yearbook and touched the lives of many teachers and students, including myself. May blessings and peace come to your family and be with you now and always.
