Mildred Armentrout Obituary

Mildred Earl Glover Armentrout, 86, of Sunnyside Retirement Community, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Armentrout was born in Belles Valley, Virginia, on January 15, 1922, to the late Brooks Emmett Glover and Made Rebecca Nichols Glover.

She graduated from Goshen High School and received her Diploma in Nursing from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond. She served as 2nd Lt. in the United States Army Nursing Corp. Mrs. Armentrout worked as a registered nurse in Richmond, Hopewell, and Charlottesville, and retired from the University of Virginia Health System.

On August 9, 1945, she and Langley David Armentrout of Goshen, Virginia, were married at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Mr. Armentrout preceded her in death on September 2, 2004.

Mrs. Armentrout is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Leigh Armentrout of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Martha A. Hammer and her husband, James, of Harrisonburg. Also surviving are a grandson, David Hammer and his wife, Gabrielle, of Huntersville, North Carolina; and a great-granddaughter, Madeleine Blair Hammer. Also surviving are her sister, Polly A. Withrow of Bridgewater; a sister-in-law, Blanche Quick of Vernona, and many nieces and nephews.

According to her wishes, Mrs. Armentrout's body has been left to the University of Virginia Health System for Diabetes Research.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. at Sunnyside's Meredith Chapel on Saturday, January 12, 2008.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Mrs. Armentrout's memory be made to the Armentrout Named Endowed Fund to benefit the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Cancer Center, 235 Cantrell Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA 22801; or the Fellowship Fund at Sunnyside Retirement Community, 3935 Sunnyside Drive, Suite A, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Family and friends may call at the home of Mrs. Armentrout's daughter, Martha Hammer, at anytime.
