Abbie Henry Obituary

HENRY, ABBIE NASH "Sally" (Sutton), 59, a longtime resident of Highland Park and Santa Fe, NM, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2003 after an eighteen month battle with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), which is closely related to Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Sally Henry was born on May 30, 1944 in Dallas, TX, the daughter of John Nash and Faye Kennedy Sutton. Sally is survived by her husband, "Sandy" Edward James Henry, III of Dallas, TX and Santa Fe, NM; her son, Richard Thomas Mullen, Jr. and his wife Natasha Lelise Merritt of San Francisco, CA; her daughter Abbie Nash and her husband Todd Marshall Tomlin of Dallas, TX; her step-son Edward "Ned" Henry IV of Dallas, TX; her step-son Peter Hutchinson Henry of Austin, TX; her father-in-law E.J. Henry, Jr.; and Thomas Sutton and John Sutton. In her childhood years, Ms. Henry attended Bradfield Elementary School. During her 4th grade year, Sally began riding and working at the Glen Lake Stables near White Rock Lake, kindling an enthusiasm for horses that would last her entire life. A 1962 graduate of The Hockaday School, Ms. Henry was an active honors student in the classroom and involved in many extracurricular activities, including captaincy of "The Green Team". Ms. Henry attended Southern Methodist University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Government in 1966 and a Master of Liberal Arts in 1974. While at SMU, Sally was actively involved in the Pi Beta Phi sorority, where she passionately formed many life-long friendships and relationships. Sally's dedication to the raising of her children and the growth and development of her family was the paramount occupation of her adulthood where she also combined community activities with professional pursuits. Ever known for her quick wit, lively humor and intelligent conversation, Sally was loved dearly by her family and her many friends, the most valued elements of her life. Sally and Sandy Henry established residence in 1995 in Santa Fe, NM, where they were active members of the community. Most recently, in 2002 Sally served as Co-Chairwoman of the Santa Fe Buckaroo Ball, the largest fundraising event in New Mexico, which raises funds for at-risk children in Santa Fe County. Santa Fe provided a wonderful backdrop for her love of the arts and the pursuit of Sally's passion for Arabian Horses, which she bred and showed with great success at events throughout the country for many years. She garnered multiple US and Canadian National Championships, both as amateur rider and owner. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, TX at 11:00 a.m. Donations may be made in memory of Sally Henry to The Santa Fe Buckaroo Ball, 308 Catron Street, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 87501.

My memories of forty and more years ago are quite fresh just now and I can see the young and vibrant Sally at various moments of that time. My heart goes out to your family in their sorrow.

Sally and I used to sit and visit in open houses for literally hours. I cherished, and always will, her keen sense of humor, her honest opinion, and her great laugh. I didn't get to see her often enough but we always picked up right where we left off. I will really miss Sally.

My deepest sympathies go out to your family fof this loss. I have many fond memories of picking our children up together, long ago, at Cimmaroncita Ranch Camp in New Mexico and driving to Santa Fe. As well as serving on the Green Team at Hockaday with Sally. Annie Young Shelton, Class of '65 Hockaday.
