Jimmie Styles Obituary

Jimmie Carter Styles, 76, of Fort Worth passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole, 702 8th Ave., Fort Worth. Interment: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials: The family would appreciate gifts to the Tarrant County College Foundation, 1500 Houston St., Fort Worth, Texas 76102-6524, 817-515-5277.
Jimmie was born to Roy T. and Hellon B. Styles in Evans County, Ga., on Oct. 17, 1931. As a young man he worked for the world-famous Claxton Fruitcake Co. in Claxton, Ga. He married Jimmie M. Strickland on Jan. 4, 1952. The fact that both of their names are Jimmie was a longtime source of humor, confusion, frustration and amusement.
Jimmie served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War with most of his service time aboard the USS Fremont. He earned a bachelor's degree at Georgia Southern University and a master's degree and Ed.S. from George Peabody College.
In 1965 Jimmie brought his young family to Fort Worth to help form the foundation of Tarrant County Junior College. He was a longtime member of the Fort Worth Founders Lions Club and loved to play tennis, travel, fish and water ski. He retired as vice chancellor for research and development from TCJC after 28 years of service. In retirement, he traveled with friends in RV clubs and loved to be outdoors. He will be sorely missed. We love you, Dedad.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Roy T. Styles Jr.
Survivors: Wife of 56 years, Jimmie Strickland Styles; sons, Dennis Carter Styles and his wife, Lacy, and Duaine Lester Styles and his wife, Karen; daughter, Denise Hellon Styles and her husband, Gary King; grandchildren, Kimberley Vega and her husband, Eli, Melissa Styles, Aaron Styles, Andrew Styles, Jason King and his wife, Crystal, Jessica, Samuel, Hannah, Roy and Rachel King and Neil Bateman; nephews; and nieces.

We would like to offer my deepest sympathy to the Styles family. I came to work at TCJC in 1970 in the Computer Services department. Mr. Styles was always there for guidance, help, and support. He had such wonderful stories to share with his employees. You were part of his work family, but you felt as though you knew his family. He also became good friends with my husband, Jack. Mr. Styles was a very professional man and it was a pleasure to have known him. May God bless you and provide comfort during this time.

May God be with you Mrs. Styles and your entire family. I worked with Mr. Styles during the early 70's and he was a very professional person to work with. I truly remember him being a dedicated family man. May your memories carry you through the lonely moments because nothing can take your memories away.

I will always remember how Jimmie loved Mrs. Jimmie and all of his family. He was so very proud of all of you. In those early days of the college, we all worked some very long hours. Neither of us would have missed the chance to see T C J C get off to a great start. Jimmie was a huge part in the success of the college.

I have a very warm feeling when I think of Jimmie c. and his family. It was a big stretch moving from Florida to Texas. Some how it was comforting to have friends make that move with us, and the Styles did .That was in 1965.Though I haven't been in touch for many years, I do think about you every year. Love, Cindy Rushing

What Tarrant County College became is due to the vision contribution of Jimmie Styles and others who were there in the beginning. His positive attitude, modesty and professional approach were characteristics appreciated by faculty who knew and worked with him.

May God bless the family and give you peace.

May it help in some way to know that friends are sharing the sorrow in your heart.

Mr. Styles was a man of great stature. I will never forget his poise and business-like manner. But most of all, I will never forget his red stick shift that he used to drive to work. The day I purchased the car from him he could see the shine in my eyes, because I loved it too!

We were associates for Thirty some years. Jimmie and I Worked as colleagues at BCJC in Florida and here at TCJC Ft.Worth. He was much respected both places along with Dr. Rushing as a college leader and pioneer with modern community colleges. My final respects for him and sympathies in the loss to family and friends.

I'm deeply saddened by the news of Jimmie Styles’ death. I worked for him many years at TCC and found him to be very dedicated to his work and family. He was very entertaining at times and took the time to greet people. I remember his office visits the most. He would drop in for a cup of coffee, checking to see if we needed anything, and would share his life with us, both career and personal. I will always remember his friendly smile and his laughter. My deepest sympathy.

I just wanted the family to know how much I enjoyed working with Jimmie while I was at TCC. His dedication to the college was quite visible and although I was in the Financial Aid area, we worked together on some foundation activity and new programs. I currently work out of town and will be unable to attend but I do want you to know how much I liked and admired Jimmie. Sincerely, Micki Roemer

Jimmie C. Styles and his family came into our lives more than forty-six years ago. For almost three decades our careers were intertwined and I shall always be deeply indebted to him for his support. We shared dreams for the two colleges we were privileged to start and both lived long enough to see those dreams come true. Integrity, Dedication, Reliability, Loyalty - - - - these are words that so accurately describe Jimmie. My sincere condolences to his family.
