In the rising of the sun and in its going down,
We remember them.
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter
We remember them.
In the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring,
We remember them.
In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer,
We remember them.
In the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn,
We remember them.
In the beginning of the year and when it ends,
We remember them.
When we are weary and in need of strength,
We remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart,
We remember them.
When we have joys we yearn to share,
We remember them.
So long as we live, they too shall live,
For they are now a part of us,
As we remember them.

Dear Jane, Nancy, John and family,
I just recently learned of Mel's death (Lynn and I were away for a few weeks, and I hadn't read a local paper for a while). I will always remember him as a wonderful person, a great teacher and physician who really cared for his patients. He was also always available for advice, which I often took advantage of when he was in practice. I once did a summer project for him (when I was in high school or college), and the experience influenced me to go into ophthalmology. My deepest condolences to all of you, and I will surely miss him.
With Sympathy,
Jay Katzen

I was sent a patient by Dr Alper years ago. She was a very nice person with a tough vision issue. Melvin Alper cared for her in the Washington community and when she moved to East Lansing he called me personally to provide detailed insight into her diagnosis and treatment strategy. I was very impressed by that personal touch. I did my best to provide her care similiar to what she had received from Dr Alper. I did this for about a year, after which he called me back. He said, "David, you have done a good job with my former patient. She appreciates it as do I. Keep up the good work. The following year he called me again about our mutual patient and he said, "you must be doing a very good job because she has stopped calling me....It was with the second call that he invited me to Washington to give Grand Rounds at his hospital. I went with my wife and we had a terrific time.A simply wonderful gesture from a man I barely knew, but who new new how to care for his patients in his home town or when they moved far away. Melvin Alper taught me a lot through that one patient. I could only imagine what it was like to work with him.

My husband was 35 when he started going to Dr Alper in 1955. Dr Alper found he had Glaucoma. Thanks to his wonderful treatment through the years, my husband still had vision when he died at age 80. Barbara Gesswein
