Published by Garden Chapel - Mesa from Sep. 18 to Sep. 19, 2008.
Elizabeth Phelps White, 91 years of age, passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday evening, September 14, 2008. She was born July 21, 1917 to Orson A. Phelps and Rebecca H. Allen Phelps in Mesa. Elizabeth attended Mesa Public Schools through high school. After high school, she won a music scholarship to Arizona State Teachers College (now Northern Arizona University) in Flagstaff, Arizona. There she graduated with a bachelors of art degree in music education and met her beloved husband John C. White. The Whites enjoyed 67 years of marriage. Elizabeth taught music in the Mesa Public schools for 26 years. Known by her choral students as "Mama White," she taught at East Mesa Jr. High, West Mesa Jr. High and then was asked to teach choral music at the newly built Westwood High School in 1963. She taught at Westwood for 17 years before retiring in 1979. She also presided over the Arizona Music Educators Association from 1979-1981 and was honored by that association as Music Educator of the Year in 1982. She was recognized by the Choral Directors of Arizona with their Lifetime Recognition Award in 2002. Elizabeth and John spent their retirement years with family, friends and traveling throughout the world. They served as full-time missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand at the temple visitor's center for 18 months. Elizabeth is survived by her husband, their son, John C. White Jr. (Carol) of Mesa, and daughters, Kathy Egan (Robert) of Sandy, Utah and Debby Boyd (Gary) of Las Vegas, Nevada. They have 17 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. There will be a graveside service at the City of Mesa Cemetery on Friday, September 19, 2008 for the family. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 9:30 AM at the L.D.S. Fairfield Ward chapel located at 4640 E. Holmes, Mesa, Arizona, 85206. The Whites request that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in their behalf to the John C. and Elizabeth P. Elizabeth White,
What a teacher, friend and confidant. I remember my senior year in school we won (Concert Choir) a trip to Southern California. I couldn´t go because of financial circumstances. But she had other plans for me.The plans she had worked out and I was able to go. What a experience it was! It changed my life forever. Thank you Mrs. White, my favorite teacher and friend forever.

I just now learned of Liz's moving on to the next chapter. What a loss for all of us, but what an enormous gift her life gave us! I absolutely would not be doing what I'm doing today (directing choirs), but more importantly, living a happy joyous life, if it weren't for her influence on me. I still remember the first time I heard a choir she directed. I remember the songs. I was hooked for life. And yes, we end our concerts with "The Lord Bless You and Keep You," a blessing that will keep on giving that gift she radiated with every smile, every gesture, every breath. Thank you.

Mama White had a profound influence on my life, both in high school and as an adult. I feel privileged to have been part of the last Westwood Honor Choir under her direction as part of the class of '79. So many memories - from the little things like seeing her tug on the hair on the top of her head pulling herself up to indicate that we were singing flat, to the most magnificent memories of singing in a beautiful old church in Hawaii on Easter Sunday. A number of years ago Mama White called me to see if I would like her Phoenix Symphony tickets for a concert she could not attend, which involved some serious detective work on her part since I hadn't talked to her in quite a few years! Having the chance to have a lengthy conversation with her was a greater gift than the generous gift of the tickets. Her unique wit, tenacity, grace, talent, and strength are without duplication in anyone I have met before or since. What a blessing to have known her.

Years ago I heard Mrs. White sing "O Holy Night". A Christmas program combining several schools and grades was being put on and it was during a rehearsal that some of us first heard the entire program. While Mrs. White sang all of the kids were completely quiet (and there were a lot of us!) and when she finished, after a moment's quiet, everyone spontaneously burst into applause. Her voice was beautiful and the song touched my 12 year old heart. "O Holy Night" became my favorite Christmas Carol at that time and is so today. Mrs. White was very special and used her talent for the great benefit of others.

Dear White Family,

I thought the world of your mother and grandmother. I first met her when Debby and I became friends at MCC and then best friends and roomates at NAU.

Mrs. White always made me feel so welcome in your home and radiated love.

I have shared many of my memories of both of your grandparents with Debby
in the last few weeks.

The Whites were a true love story and just glowed when you mentioned each others names. Elizabeth was so proud of her family, an outstanding educator, a lady in every sense of the word and always did God's work.

God Bless You All. Heaven just received a beautiful and deserving angel.

I have pondered the tremendous impact "Mama White" made on my life in a few short formative years. I thank her family most for sharing her talents and the ability to mold character. Good music truly does enlighten and uplift and she brightened many a soul through her efforts. "Til we meet again" Love, Cole

MRS. WHITE WAS BY FAR MY FAVORITE TEACHER OF MY ENTIRE EDUCATION. I WAS PART OF THE WESTWOOD CLASS OF 1965. I AM GRATEFUL TO HEAR OF HER WONDERFUL LIFE AFTER HER RETIREMENT. TO HAVE 17 GRANDCHILDREN AND 38 GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN TELLS ME ABOUT HOW TRUELY LOVED SHE OBVIOUSLY WAS. I WILL ALWAYS TREASURE OUR FRIENDSHIP AND MY MEMORIES OF SINGING IN THE CONCERT CHOIR FOR THREE YEARS. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. HERB ADAMS (LOS ANGLES, WESTWOOD CLASS OF '65)

Mama White and the choirs at WHS were some of my highlight memories from high school. Mama White used gentle humor, a sharp wit, and a bit of feist to make singing more than just making music. The various choirs became "families" under her leadership. She didn't settle for anything less than excellence, a lesson that went far beyond high school. I am very grateful for those memories and those lessons and for the circumstances that allowed our paths to cross occasionally in the years that followed.

I can't tell you how nervous I was on that March day in 1966 when my Sister, Sharron, and I showed up at Westwood for the first time. You see, my Father had moved his business to Phoenix and my Mom and Dad felt Mesa, Arizona, would be a wonderful place to raise their family. It was a Monday morning and since there were only 2 months left of our Jr. year, it was suggested we take chorus as one of our classes. I walked into Mrs. White's room, didn't know a soul (except for my Sister), was introduced to the choir and instantly felt like I was "home"! Mrs. White called my parent's and made this remark, "When I met Sharron and Gary, it was as if my "children" had come home". May I tell you, that was the beginning of a change of life for me. Then South Pacific...she chose me for Emile.."What, me?", "Yes, you!" After that, I continued hearing "Yes, you's" from Mrs. White...the words that encouraged me, pushed me fully into music, and gave me a stature for life, a phrase for which I would live my life..."YES, YOU, Gary!" So, her influence changed my life...forever I will thank her and love the memory of this AWESOME woman...my Friend, Mrs. White! Oh, and by the way, how I loved the fresh homemade bread at the White's home on Saturday's...still have a problem eating too much bread..thanks, Elizabeth!!!!!!!

Not living in the Mesa area any more I don't get much of the local news so I was saddened to read a posting to the Westwood message board in Classmates.com about the passing of Liz White. I was one of the lucky ones who helped "start" Westwood as a member of the first Freshman class and the first class to go 4 years at Westwood. Class of '66. I was in Intermediate Mixed Chorus my Freshman year singing 2nd Tenor. Liz invited me to join the Concert Choir for my Sophmore year and the first day of school she was taking roll and she called my name and I answered, "Here". She repeated my name and asked where I was. I raised my hand and repeated, "Here" in my baritone voice. She said, "There went another tenor". My voice had dropped a lot over that summer but she never held it against me. Instead she taught me the fine art of singing baritone. That only lasted one year though as I soon dropped to sing bass my junior and senior years. No matter what octave I sang in, Liz guided and encouraged me to bring out the best in my voice. As much as I disliked most of high school, I truly loved Concert Choir. She "made my day." I was also honored to be a member of Madrigals so was able to spend extra time with Liz and her guiding and loving hand. She was an awesome person and a wonderful teacher of music and I will never forget her.

So many of my memories of high school revolve around choir. It was an oasis of joy and love in my life. I have now been teaching high school theatre for the past 12 years and often think of Mama White's love and dedication, her skills at reaching to all her students and inspiring them to try harder and achieve more. Please know that her influence is far flung and long-lasting, as I now attempt to pass these things along to my students.

I was one of those guys who didn't really want to sing, but thanks to Elizabeth she taught me to love to sing. My sympathy to the White family.

Charlie Davis

September 22, 2008

It was my sophomore year at Westwood High, 1962, the first year of its existence. The second week of school I was sauntering to my class in a sea of students jammed in the hallway when this tiny giant of a woman stepped in front of me. She peered up at me (I was 6'3") with those big eyes and said, “You're Charlie Davis, aren't you?”

Not knowing who she was, but sure I had done something wrong, I stammered, “Yes.”

“Then, why aren't you in my choir?” she asked.

I knew then, who I was talking to. “Because I can't sing, Mrs. White,” I answered truthfully.

Smiling and with a sparkle in her eye she said, “Any, son of Phil Davis and brother of Dian Davis, can sing.”

“No, I really can't. Ask my sister. She'll tell you I can't even sing on tune with the radio.”

“Please come with me,” she said, and gently took my arm.

We went to the office, changed my schedule, and changed my life.

I owe so much of what has been good in my life to Elizabeth.

She affected, so many, thousands and hundreds of thousands of people, not only with her teaching, but through those she taught. How fortunate we were to have been touched by her life, how fortunate Westwood was to have her those many years, how fortunate the world is for good people like Elizabeth, John, John (the son) Kathy and Debby.

The first year Westwood was in existence, approximately 20 people, as I recall, all Freshman and Sophomores, made the All Sate Choir. I was one of them.

Thank you, Mrs. White.

Mrs. White (along with Archie Rader and Joe Lloyd) gave me one of the biggest gifts of my life-the love of music. Mrs. White instilled this love in thousands of other kids (most of whom aren't within spitting distance of childhood anymore!) But we still remember, and we've passed this love to our friends, children, spouses. What a blessed legacy to leave behind. Thanks, Mrs. White! We'll honor your memory by continuing to sing.

Dearest Whites,

It is an honor to pay tribute to one of my all-time favorite people in the entire world. Elizabeth was a dear friend from childhood. I remember having Merry Christmas at the White House. John and Elizabeth were always kind and gracious, examples of noble friendship in every way. I'm glad we're related, but even more glad we shared a lifelong friendship. (PS: Kathy, if I hang up will you call me back?)

How we will miss our beloved choral teacher and friend! So often her face and conducting hands come to mind when I hear or sing a choral piece from long ago. She is the standard for great choral teachers and directors. Because of her zeal for music, many students' lives were enhanced and numerous musicians were created while all built character. What a beautiful legacy of love and joy for your family and all who knew her. We wish we could be with you at her funeral today. Our love, Edward and Linda Smith

My association with the White Family was such a special part of my childhood. I was blessed to know Mrs. White first as "Kathy's Mom". Mr. White was the principal of our grade school, Edison, and it was such a special thing to actually "hang out" at the principal's house! I was always impressed at how organized the White's were as Elizabeth worked outside the home. Kathy always knew what her chores were after school and she was good about getting them done. Probably my favorite memories were playing records of Oklahoma and other Broadway musicals in the White's living room and singing at the top of our lungs. I just loved being in their home! Being in Mrs. White's Concert Choir my Senior year ('65-'66) was the frosting on the cake. I had no business being in the Choir, but she let me in and it was such a wonderful experience.

My love to John, Debby, and my buddy Kathy. I will always cherish my hours spent growing up with you. Mr. White--thank you for being such a wonderful example and friend to me.

With much love,

During my half-hour drive one morning to the high school where I currently teach here in IL, I thought of dear "Mrs. White" (I was too much in awe of her to ever call her "mama") as I listened to a Tabernacle Choir CD that has a recording of the song, "The Lord Bless You and Keep You". Knowing that she was getting up in years, I remember thinking that when she passed on, I wouldn't be in the audience to help sing that beloved song during the memorial service, as I imagine it would be. So, for all of you who are still in AZ and attended the service, I hope you sang extra loud for me!
As long as I live, I will remember that incredible year-1972-when, as a senior, I was privileged to be part of one of the greatest choral experiences of my life-singing in Honor Choir at the All-State Music Festival at Grady Gammage! [All those who were with me in that choir know whereof I speak.]
May we honor her legacy and influence in our lives by striving to be the kind of example that she was to each of us.
May the Good Lord bless and keep us all until we meet again!

September 20, 2008

Everytime I have seen Mrs. White at an event or out to dinner I have told her that she was the teacher at Westwood that had the greatest influence in my life.
She encouraged and guided me as we chose the two choir performance outfits for the year.
She always gave me confidence and a belief in myself and my abilities that has carried on in life.
Through her influence, our family loves music and my children all loved their choir experiences.
Every card I send or sign I close with this:

May the Lord bless you and keep you

Thank you for everything Mrs. White!

We will miss you Elizabeth. You have taught us all to be a little better! "Watch me." "Sit up straight." "Sing on top of the pitch." "To be late is to be rude." "You are so wonderful." "Thank you." "I love you." You are certainly one of a kind and have meant so much to so many throughout your wonderful, full life. I love you and miss you. Thank YOU from the bottom of my heart for your kindness and friendship!

A good teacher never fully realizes how many lives she touches.... I challenge all who read this to make a commitment to tell the teachers you've had who made a difference in your life, the lives of your children, or within your various communities, thank you for the work they do! Mrs. White was passionate about her work, and this is one thing that made her so very powerful - because she had a purpose for everything she did!

I never had the opportunity to know Mrs. White, but I know some of her students and believe that they admired and respected her. What and "Honor" it was to be in her choir at Westwood in 1977. She was instrumental in my appreciation for music, especially where it came to sight reading -- yes the dreaded sight reading every time we had class. In adding my voice along with Sharon Overall I am grateful she came to our choir reunion last year. What a treat and a fun memory. I have always had the utmost respect for her and her musical talents.

To Mrs. White's family -- "May The Lord Bless You and Keep You" at this time. Thank you for sharing her with us.

Elizabeth is an amazing lady! Last year I was fortunate to accompany the 1977 Honor Choir Reunion. She led the group in several of the old songs that the choir performed during their senior year. It was the first time I played the piano for her in a choir setting. She was so musical, thoughtful, and entertaining (she was hysterically funny!). I will cherish this experience as one of my special life moments and will always remember how kind she has been to me and my husband Kelly through the years. I'm sure Kelly has already joined her heavenly choir! Elizabeth will be remembered as a influential and inspiring musician, mentor and friend.

As a '71 Westwood graduate, I "grew up" under the very positive influence of Mrs. White (Honor Choir), Joe Lloyd and Archie Rader (Orchestra). Who can forget the wonderful gatherings at the White house ("3-1-5 North Fraser Drive") to pick out All-State solo music?

In the early '80's, my daughter was in Kindergarten at Salk. She would come home and tell me about her music teacher, Mrs. White. You can't imagine my shock when I went to the school program to see "my" Mrs. White directing my daughter and the Kindergartener's choir! She had come out of retirement for some part-time work with another generation of students who adored her!

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of this wonderful wife, mother, friend and mentor.

Although I was never in the choir, Mrs. White was known not only for her musical talent, but also for the way she treated her students. I remember a friend saying that Mrs. White stood at the entrance to her Westwood classroom with her hand extended so that she could greet them individually. They knew they were valued. The Chieftan Annual was dedicated to her in 1966 and when it was announced at an assembly the students were thrilled because she was so deserving.

I also remember going home one day with Kathy and sitting on the couch with her family for dessert, which was chocolate cake with hot chocolate pudding drizzled on top! They enjoyed being together and made me feel welcome.

My deepest sympathy to this lovely family.

It is with sad thoughts that I find myself connected to my past in this way. I was in Mrs. White's chorus class and even now I sometimes find myself singing the songs she taught us during those days. I'll never forget in ceremony of the first graduating class of Westwood High School when we sang, "Give me your Tired, your Poor, your Troubled masses yearning to be Free." I still hear it in my head, the movements, the tones. Aha, it brought chills to me, I was in the choir singing that song at my graduation. The Chorus led by Mrs. White.
Those days at Westwood High School with the teachers bringing their riches to us young minds, I just wish the youth of today could feel the school spirit, the artistic experiences that we acquired during those times in 1963-4 and 1965,.....
I just feel grateful for the people like Mrs White who guided me during those days to a place inside me where art lives on.
Thank you Mrs. White. And, thanks to her family for helping her be the person she was so she could be strong and stable for us kids.

Liz White was an icon in the history of music education in Arizona. Her choirs were always exceptional but more than that the positive relationship she had with her students and the nurturing that she gave each one was at the pinnacle of attainment that every teacher aspires. Elizabeth White was the competition. I went to Mesa High and sang in the A Cappella Choir and our choir was always in competition with Mrs. White's choir. The competition between the Mesa High Harry Garrett choirs and the Westwood High Elizabeth White choirs was legendary. She made choral music in Mesa superior; which was the rating her choirs always received from the judges at ASU.

Liz took me in as a young music teacher at Westwood High School and our bond has been solid since. Although our experiences together were not always in agreement, one could never resist her loving smile and recognize the highest quality of musical education and an ongoing, sincere concern for every student. In fact our combined tenure at that brand new school in the Performing Arts in Mesa gave us some of the most satisfying and exciting musical moments that still cannot be matched.
I am sure that Liz is organizing the celestial choir and giving Gabriel a bad time for playing too loud and covering the choir.
