Being away from Fort Wayne for 12 years, I just heard the news of Joe's passing. He was a classy guy who always could be counted on to tackle any task he assigned thoroughly and on time. He cared deeply about The News-Sentinel and those who worked there. He worked hard and his retirement was far too short.

In reflecting about working with Joe, one reminder of his humor keeps coming back -- his love of picking on my hometown of Columbia City. He often would proclaim a newsroom contest with prizes: "First place wins one weekend in Columbia City; second prize is two weekends in Columbia City." Or, "A tornado wiped out Columbia City; the loss is estimated at $700!"
But I liked Joe anyway! One of the chief reasons was he very clearly understood the most important building block in a journalist's career is integrity. And that was always a constant principle in his dealings with me. I value my experience working with him!

Eric,
Our family wants you to know how sorry we are for the loss of your father. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 reminds us that the Father of compassion comforts us in all our troubles. May you and your family feel the comfort of your heavenly father.
Love to you,
Joe, Diane, Ashley, Zachary, Ben and Molly Gibson

Kari,
You and the family are in my thoughts and prayers at this time. I talked to Joe a few times up at Gene & Rosies, and he was always upbeat about things. I have found God always takes the best. I know what you are going through at this time. Some days I have to take it an hour at a time to get through the day. Other days I'm okay. Hang in there and remember you are in my prayers. Love and Prayers, Sandy Trisler

Joe is credited with bringing diversity to The News-Sentinel in the 1970s and early 1980s. Though an ardent Reds fan, he was instrumental in hiring fans of the Tigers, White Sox, Yankees, Pirates — even the lowly Cubs. And as bright as spot as he was in the newsroom, he was even more fun to be around away from it, whether it be on a road trip to a Ball State football game, throwing back a few after a softball game, or gathering at his home to take part in two things he enjoyed the most: spending time with friends and family.

The world needs people like Joe Sheibley. Three cheers for Sheibley.

I came to know a lot of good people during the 35 years I spent in the newspaper buisiness and Joe Sheibley was one of the best. It was an honor to have known and worked for him. Rest in peace, Joe. You deserve it.
