Elizabeth B. Swann (1924 - 2012)

On Monday, December 31, 2012, Elizabeth Bernice Swann, passed away peacefully at the Bradford Oaks Nursing Home in Clinton, Maryland. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 9 am until Mass of Christian Burial 10 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church 201 St. Mary's Avenue in LaPlata, Maryland 20646. Interment to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in LaPlata, MD.

Elizabeth Bernice Swann, who was affectionately known as “Bernice”, departed this life on December 31, 2012. She was born in Pomfret, Maryland on October 4, 1924 to the late William Alex and Sarah (Sally) Ann Swann. She was the second eldest of nine siblings. She received her education from the Charles County Public School System in Pomfret, Maryland.

Bernice was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in LaPlata, Maryland where she attended for many years and remained a devoted Christian. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards and being with her family and friends. Bernice was united in holy matrimony to John Ruey Swann on July 17, 1942 in Charles County, Maryland. There were no children born to this union; however after her Aunt, Mary Catherine Swann, died in childbirth, they raised and nurtured her beautiful daughter, Mary Catherine (Cathy) Proctor from the time she was six days old.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, William Alex and Sarah Ann Swann, her husband: John Ruey Swann, her two sisters: Catherine Geneva Swann and Myrtle Regina Swann, and her three brothers: William Leroy Swann, John Richard Swann and William Alex Swann Jr.

Bernice leaves to cherish her memory a loving daughter, Mary Catherine (Cathy) Proctor, one son-in-law: James Larry Proctor, one sister: Mary Viola Thompson, two brothers: John Theodore Swann and Joseph Lindbergh Swann, two grandchildren: James Gary Proctor and Steven Christopher Proctor, four great-grandchildren: James Ricardo Savoy, Christopher Marcellous Proctor, Steven Derrick Proctor, and Nicole Crystal Proctor, and a host of other relatives and friends. Bernice will be greatly missed by those who knew, loved, and respected her.
