Frank Michael Meyer, 72, died in his sleep on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at White Oak Manor in Charlotte. Born in Chicago, Illinois on February 12, 1939, he was the only son of the late Frank E. Meyer and Florence S. Meyer. Frank grew up outside of Chicago in Glenview, Illinois and was married to Karen S. Meyer on Feb. 3, 1962. After living in Northbrook, Illinois for several years, they moved to Delray Beach, Florida for a time. Frank and his family moved to Charlotte, NC in 1973 to work for JA Jones Construction Company as an Electrical Estimator. During the 20+ years that he worked at JA Jones, Frank was able to travel the world for projects in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. After retiring, Frank began volunteering at Union Academy Charter School in Monroe, NC where his grandchildren attended. This led him to a second career working with their information systems. He loved his years at Union Academy, and worked until his stroke in June 2011. He was a loving husband and father who was a king at building or fixing almost anything and always kept a bag of tools handy 'just in case". His love for golden retrievers was shared by his wife Karen. They had given homes to over 14 different goldens with as many as four at one time. His current dogs, Sam, Cody and Honey will miss him but we know the others have already greeted him in heaven. Frank is in a place with no suffering with his beloved dogs by his side. He is survived by his wife, Karen S. Meyer; their children, Bill Meyer and his wife, Catherine, of Wesley Chapel, Laura Davidson and her husband, Terry, of Monroe and John Michael Meyer of Charlotte and his fiancé Donna Lewis of Stallings; his sisters, Carol Wenk (Richard), and Nancy Meyer of Hilton Head, SC; and by his wonderful grandchildren, Casey and Carson Meyer, and Sarah and Mark Davidson. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 20, 2012 at 4:00 PM in Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112. The family will visit with friends and relatives following the memorial service. As his son, John said, "the world lost an incredible man yesterday ... was a great husband and the most awesome father..... he was king of building anything .. go-karts … soapbox derby cars ...furniture ... radios and computers .. doghouses, could fix anything.. including hearts ...he was a great man who will be so incredibly missed by all that knew him.. we love you dad with all our hearts..... rest in peace ...." I miss you Frank. Who is going to keep me straight now and listen to all my problems? Rest easy old man and watch over us all.

I worked with Frank at J.A. Jones (1985-1995). I spent many hours chatting with him and always enjoyed his company and stories of his family and the wonderful dogs that he and Karen help rescue. I will miss his regular emails. Rest in peace Frank!

I had the privilege of working with and getting to know Frank. What a lovely man. We shared a love of dogs. I also enjoyed it when I would say, "Hi, grandpa" and he would giggle and say "Hi Tammie" without turning around! That memory makes me smile.
He will surely be missed.

Frank was such a sweet man with a heart of gold. It was evident when he spoke of his family. His burly voice would always make me sit up and take notice but once you got to know Frank you would quickly realize that he was just a big teddy bear! He is leaving behind many friends. We will miss him at UA. My thoughts and prayers will be with you all.

I was privileged to know Frank though his work at Union Academy. He loved working on computers and had a knack for storing parts and keeping everything in its place. He was a lot of fun to joke around with and always wanted to help out. I am truly sorry for your loss. Frank will be missed.

I worked with Frank in the Media Center at UA. We were always the first ones at work and always had some good conversations while making the coffee. He always talked about his "fur babies" and his grandkids and world events. He will be truly missed. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.
