In the late 1960's I met Ed & Larry as I became a member of the Wythe Fire Company & Rescue Squad family. Over the years I have often thought of Ed, especially each time I returned a garden hose to its reel as this action reminds me of how we worked together reeling up the booster line on Engine 31.

I also recall getting building materials from Ed at the Lowe's Contractor Supply on Jefferson Avenue.

A few years before I retired from the Waterworks, in the hallway outside my office, I heard once again the unique & unmistakable voice of Ed Gwaltney.

I extend to Larry & the entire family my deepest sympathy for the loss of a truly great man.

I'm so sorry Larry to read of the passing of your Father. As soon as I saw the last name I thought is this person related to Larry. Your Father was a very active man from reading his obituary, that's what kept him living as long as he did, sounds like he wanted to keep doing things even after his retirement. We should all do that when retirement comes instead of sitting around doing nothing. May the happy memories you had with your Father get you through this sad time and then further down the road of life these memories you think of will make you smile. My condolences Larry to you and your family - Take Care
