Helen Wray Lawson

NEWPORT NEWS - Helen Wray Lawson, 86, of Newport News, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Saturday, February 21st, 2015 after a short illness. Helen is the beloved wife of John W. Lawson. They shared 64 years of marriage together. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Helen was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Isom Wray of New Kensington, Pennsylvania. She graduated from New Kensington High School and went on to attend Richmond Professional Institute (now VCU) with a focus in fashion design. During the summer of 1950, Helen would meet her soon to be husband during a brief stay in Newport News. The soul mates were inseparable ever since and ultimately married on January 12th, 1951. During her younger years, Helen greatly enjoyed working side by side with her husband, as the office manager of his local business, Lawson Surveying. She was also actively involved in the Junior Women's Club as well as a member of the Oyster Point Cove Board of Directors. Helen will also be fondly remembered for her love of the beach, her skilled stock market trading, her passionate spirit, but mostly the love, compassion, and undying devotion both her and her husband shared during their many years together. Helen is survived by her husband, John Lawson, her daughter, Dr. Cheryl Lawson, her son and his wife, John Lawson Jr. and Diane Lawson, her grandchildren, Jamie Wilder and her husband Sean Wilder, John Lawson III, and Julia Lawson, and her step great grandson, Tristan Wilder, and also her beloved dogs, Brody and Luke, and other family and friends. Helen is preceded in death by her mother, Martha Doar Wray, her father, Robert Isom Wray, and two of her beloved dogs, Spatz and Princess. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, February 27th, 2015 at 1pm. The funeral service will follow at 2pm. Both visitation and the service will be at Peninsula Funeral Home at 11144 Warwick Boulevard in Newport News. Burial will be at Peninsula Memorial Park (12750 Warwick Boulevard in Newport News) at 3pm -- following a procession from the funeral home. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Peninsula Funeral Home. The Lawson Family wishes to thank the staff of The Newport, for continually and unselfishly caring for her and always treating her with the faith, dignity, and respect that she deserved. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were blessed enough to know her.
