BICKEL, JANET SMITHEY, 90, of Louisville, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2012.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Henry and Antoinette Shropshire Smithey.

She was a 1940 graduate of Shawnee Girls High School where she graduated with honors. Upon graduation she enrolled in the YMCA Business College and upon completion worked as a secretary at Curtis-Wright, Glenmore Distilleries, WHAS-TV, and various legal offices. She later attended Kentucky Southern College.

In March, 1943 she entered in the U.S. Navy WAVES where she was trained to be an instructor teaching Navel cadets and student officers primary flight procedures via the Link Instrument Trainer, the forerunner of today's simulators.

She is survived by her daughter, Robin Bickel Simcox.

There will be a memorial service 11 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel/multi purpose room at the Same Swope Care Center at the Masonic Home on Frankfort Ave. Ratterman's, 3711 Lexington Road entrusted with arrangements.
