Paul taught creative writing during my years at Brenau Women's College. He is the first person who challenged me to get my writing published.
Although I'm still unpublished in the traditional sense, I'm still writing and fulfilling that dream. I owe much of that to Paul.
I was sad to learn of his passing, and I pray that the Lord will comfort all of you during this time of grieving.

All our thoughts and prayers go out to Susan, Martha and all of Paul's extended family.
Dear Susan: I was saddened to learn of Paul's passing but knowing that so many people loved and appreciated Paul will bring you and your family much comfort in the days ahead.
I worked with Paul, both at The Atlanta Times and the AJC. Those days have long been cherished. Many of those memories returned today as I read several guest book tributes from former newspaper colleagues and friends who made my Atlanta years special. Atlanta will always be home--in large part because of these people who, since those early days still hold a special and significant part of my life. Thank you, Paul, for being a part of that life and then giving so much to others. God bless all.
Dear Susan and Martha:
I was terribly saddened to hear of Paul's passing, and know this rent in your heart, that of Martha's and of the rest of the family's will be a long time healing.
I have passed word of this awful loss to Glenn, who has lived in London for a number of years.
Our deepest condolences.
I first came across Paul in an AJC profile that ran when "The Ballad of Little River" was released in May 2000. After speaking with him at a book signing, I read that book along with two of his other books that summer. He quickly became my favorite author.
Paul was an exceptionally talented writer, but he was an even better person as I discovered when I finally met him at Manuel's in 2002. We became friends due to our common interests and he introduced me to his friends in Manuel's GIE "club". I'm grateful for his friendship and support, which he always provided.
I extend my sympathy to Susan, Martha, Josh and the rest of the Hemphill family.
