Eric knew everything about everything, not just the factual stuff but the secret of living life to the fullest. He had opinions without being opinionated and he smiled his way into your own limitations so that you always could feel wholly accepted.
He was as curious as he was generous, and when he loaned you a book on a subject you both connected with (such as Eva Hoffman’s memoir “Lost in Translation”) he would say,”Keep it” and even follow up with other books in dialog fashion.
We each got a snippet, tailor-made it seems, of his boundless mind and heart, as was so evident and palpable at his incredible memorial service. Our own thirty seven year friendship was a true gift of sharing a bond which started as a string quartet and just kept on expanding over our various life trajectories. His stopped all too abruptly. But, Boy, did he live with gusto! We may remember him like a dear brother but he really was a citizen of the world.

Eric had a great sense of style, a great eye, a great love of art, and outstanding taste in Oriental rugs. I enjoyed working with Eric (and my father did too), and I know he will be sorely missed by everyone who had the privilege and pleasure of knowing him.

Eric was one of the most delightful people I've ever known. The sharp sadness I experienced upon learning of Eric's death was accompanied, almost simultaneously, by the realization that seeing him, or even the thought that I might encounter him at the club where we both swam, invariably brought a small, reflexive smile.
By 'delightful', I mean the pure pleasure of Eric's presence and of talking with him and experiencing his intelligence, wit, warmth, urbanity, and generosity of spirit.
Our friendship only came to extend beyond 'acquaintance-ship' in the last few years. I wuz robbed.

We met Eric, Dick, and Dick's mother Allison on a tour through the rivers of South America. We enjoyed them all immensely - Allison was clearly so proud of her two sons. As the weeks passed, we came to know what a sweet, kind, intelligent, and talented man Eric was. We always thought we would see him again on another trip in some exotic locale. It is hard to believe that we never will. Barbara and Harvey Witt, Linda and Jim Kuhns
