Coach Bast made it possible for me to go to college. He opened that door when I and my Mother went to Roanoke College at the start of summer of 1955 to find out what it would take to get me in the college. He laid out the ground workout that required me to go to summer school to get a full year of geometry in 6 weeks. Coach also made it possible to get some financial help to get me started if I could reach the goal he had set. I accomplished that task and was in Roanoke College that fall. Not only was he my track coach but also my history professor. I can tell you he was tougher in the class room versus the track. I have the honor of being one of the "Bast Boys." Coach was a Great Human Being and pointed me in the right direction that led me down the path of my life time. He will be greatly missed by all that came in touch with his kindness and love for others. Mike and Steve you were certainly blessed to have a such a wonderful father for so many years. Bless you and your families.
Dear Homer, What a wonderful life you lived. To have been an influence, an inspiration, and father figure to so many is truly astounding. I have thanked you all my life and will remember you until I too pass. George Planavsky
I have many fond memories of this kind and wonderful man. I grew up knowing him since I was a third grader about 1960. His son, Steve is still my best friend from those days long ago. Homer taught us so much about running but more importantly he taught about life and being kind to your fellow man. I was so fortunate to visit with him on a recent trip back to Salem. May the Bast family be comforted knowing he is resting in peace. Pat Blackwell, Corvallis, Or.
Mr. Bast had a great influence on my life. His encouragement and faith in me have always stayed with me.He was my Mentor, teacher, coach and most of all friend. I will always keep him and his family in my prayers.RIP Coach.
Mike, Steve, and Family,
Nancy and I were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of your Dad. He was a great man and a true patriot and gentleman. I miss your Mom, as well, and the many kindnesses they both showed me as we grew up together. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Best to all, Jim and Nancy Archer
