I am stunned and saddened to hear of Ellery's passing. I join with Brooke in saying Ellery was an invaluable member of O Pinon. For me, Ellery was a natural mentor. I joined the club and met Ellery when he was growing a beard. When he shaved it about a year later, he presented a speech on the reason he had grown the beard, my memory of it (which can be very faulty) was that it was dependent on when he was again able to "shoot" a certain game animal - maybe elk or moose. This stuck with me because I did not imagine Ellery as a hunter, and was greatly relieved when he clarified that he was talking about shooting with a camera.
Ellery always had a smile for everyone, and he was an excellent speech evaluator, providing specific and constructive feedback to all and especially to new club members. His participation in our club was a big factor in my deciding to join and to become more actively involved. I have been noticing Ellery's absence from our meeting for quite a while and I have missed him. I'm sad that I did not have chance to say goodbye in person, and I hope that Ellery can hear my goodbye now. His absence will long be felt.
