Extremely sad to hear of Anna's passing. She and I were doctoral students together in the Tri-University Project at the University of Washington in the late 1960's. (Elmer Williams, Charlotte, NC, retired faculty from University of Georgia, Athens)

“Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.” –Albert Einstein

“Greatness is not found in possessions, power, position, or prestige. It is discovered in goodness, humility, service, and character.” –William Arthur Ward

These quotes embrace the essence and greatness of Anna Ochoa-Becker's philosophy of education and life. She strived to help educators help their students to excel in the academic arena and in service to the global community. She encouraged a strong work ethic, perseverance, and goal achievement. She wanted students at every level to be curious, analytical, and original- comprehensive thinkers who pursue learning for personal growth and intellectual stimulation. She wanted them to see the inherent value in academic endeavors. “Emphasis must be placed on social justice, equality, equity, diversity, and global perspectives if the world's marginalized voices are to be surfaced and addressed.” You heard Anna saying this constantly. She believed that we are all teachers and learners in every setting of life, and we each bring unique gifts to the round table. She encouraged scholarly and civic discourse which focused on issues that surface tremendous controversy and involve people with competing and complex agendas. She challenged her students and colleagues to be enlightened by an “issues centered decision making perspective.” This incredible woman was truly my mentor. Her intellect and passion for improving the human condition will go on forever because she was so willing to mentor so many of us. Anna allows us to “pay it forward” to future generations so that those marginalized voices will be heard and their issues addressed. We have all been blessed by Anna's actions and passion for life. I will miss her deeply but continue to carry out her message.
