Barbara Ann Akley

I first met Barbara at her sister Joan's wedding to my "Uncle" Vic in 1961. I was ten, and she was an incredibly glamorous teenage bridesmaid with coifed hair, satin dress, and high heel shoes. Barbara has been a presence in my life on and off ever since, but especially in recent years when my husband Mike and I would get together with her at her lovely Sanderling home on our annual trips to the Outer Banks. She was a force of nature, and her passing has left a void. We will miss her.

I will miss my cousin Barbara very much. She was only a few years older than me, and I remember her going through the stages of life right before I did. She showed me the way --- she was the first college graduate in my close family, the first one to have a convertible and one of the most beautiful brides I have ever seen. I wish my children and I could have seen her more often in recent years. She faced more than her share of challenges in her life, and did so with both grace and determination. She will be missed!
