I considered Billy Ray my best friend. We go way back to the days of Bill and Effies, Don Juan's, and Linda's bait camps. He was running buddies with my uncle David Myers. We shared many a breakfast before heading out to fish the surf, Mitchell's Cut, or even Sharpio's and Caney Creek. He had many friends, some in the music field, fishermen, and he enjoyed his "cold beer". I will miss his phone calls asking me: Capn, when ya coming to Sargent,? always ending with "well, when you get close, give me a call and we'll go wet a line". He loved to cook and entered many a chili cook off, especially the one he put red peppers chopped up and my girlfriend Faye was a judge and I told her: Vote for the one with the red peppers.
He did so many favors for me, always lending a helping hand, once he showed up my house and I had no hot water, when he left, I had hot water. One of his last stories he shared with us was a "what was I thinking" story. Seems due a counting error I had too many (21) red snapper to return to Freeport with. So I called him up and asked him to swim out to the boat in the surf and take these snappers off my hands. We put em in gunny sack and he swam back to shore with em. Later, he realized he was swimming in shark territory with a fifty pound sack of chum on his back....he said later:" What was I thinking!"
Billy Ray will be missed by his family, his extended family, his music friends, fishing buddies, and by all who knew him over the years. He was a true friend, never asking for anything more than friendship in return.
May he rest in peace,
Ted Hilton

We were so saddened to see the obituary for Billy Ray. He was a friend in our 1953 class at Brazosport High School. We played in band together, and he ran around with the Freeport gang. We all lost touch after his family moved back to Caddo. What fun memories we have of Billy. One of his claims to fame was that his family had a telephone in the BATHROOM ~ this is the days of (hard to imagine now) only one phone per family usually located in the hallway. The Adkins had several phones throughout the house. His then buddy, Terry Crain, recalls that it was because his older brother worked for the phone company. We so wish we'd all known Billy was in Sargent. My daughter and son-in-law had a home there for many years, and we could have visited and talked over old times. I'm searching for pictures that were taken on a long bus trip the band took to and from Enid, OK, for the festival there. Billy is in a number of them. And a prom picture where he and his date were at our table. I'm so sorry for your loss. We knew a kind, funny, gentle guy who I'm sure remained the same throughout his life.

Billy Ray was certainly "one of a kind" and will be missed dearly. Fantasy football won't be the same without him. May God bless you all and give you the kind of peace that only He can. You are in our prayers.
