Dr. Charles Miller Barnes 1922 - 2012

Dr. Charles Miller Barnes

Wednesday, October 24, 2012
I first met Dr. Barnes in Beijing, China when he gave a speech at China Agricultural University. I still remember the scene when Dr. and Mrs. Barnes picked me up at the airport in Austin in August, 2002, holding a sign with my name printed in Chinese, and that is when I first met Mrs. Barnes. Dr. Barnes introduced me to Dr. Kraemer, a well-known professor at Texas A&M. I have also spent time in their house several times during the summer. Dr. and Mrs. Barnes are a blessing in my life. I am so sad for the loss of two great people. They will be missed.

I have just learned of Charles's passing and so sorry to hear of this happening. Charles was my great uncle and as always in times like these I wish I had spent more time talking to him and Anna. He was most interesting and the last project was working on our "oil interest" in Rising Star. He had sent me a lot of family history and I always appreciated his effort. My dad, Charles and Jack Barnes grew up together being about the same age, and had quite some time at Grandmother's Barnes in Rising Star. God Bless the family and I send our love.

We met Charlie and Anna when we moved to Sun City in 1998. We were part of the newly formed Social Committee for the Computer Club. What fun we had in all of the social activities supporting the Computer club. Anna was from Gladewater and my mom was from Gilmer so we always talked about East Texas. Later we went on several Senior University trips where Charlie hosted us at Texas A&M Vet School. He so graciously shared his humor, his expertise and so many stories. He and Anna will both be missed.

I am sorry to have just learned about Charlie's passing. He gave me my first job, shortly after arriving at the US in 1972 as a Chilean immigrant. He was kind, generous and witty. I will never forget his professional advice and most importantly his invitation for me to stay and live with him, Anna and family while I waited for the hiring process at NASA. This invitation was offered over the phone while I was in California, and before he even knew me.
I will always be thankful to Charlie and Anna.
I am now a successful USDA employee serving at the World Orgsanization for Animal Health in Paris France.
God bless all of you

Our mom, Judy Rhoads, is one of the few remaining first cousins of Charles. She remembers him fondly and with fun stories. The Barnes family is the pioneer spirit personified.
