Dearest Meme –

What else does one say but, “I'm so very sorry for your loss”? It seems like such an inadequate phrase for someone like Papa. His death is so much more than just “a loss” – he was a very, very special man.

Mere words will never express the sadness I feel and the aching emptiness in my heart knowing Papa is gone. The world was a better place with him in it – and everyone who knew him is a better person for having had him in their lives. He brought so much joy and laughter to so many. The world will not be the same without him.

His caring and generosity were second to none, and he never expected or wanted anything in return. All the kindness and concern he always showed me will never be forgotten. Both of you were there for me more times than I can count – many times when there was no one else I could turn to. To say “thank you” seems so inadequate – but I thank you both from the bottom of my heart.

Papa was honest and direct and always spoke his mind – part of the reason we got along so well. He was one-of-a-kind - the mold broke when he was born – and there'll never, ever be another man like him. He was everything a Papa should be and so much more. The phrase, “He was a really good man”, can't begin to describe him – he was one of the finest men that ever lived.

I'll never forget him – he was the closest thing to a father I had for many years. The wonderful memories and fun times will never be forgotten. You both treated me like family. He'll be greatly missed and will have a very special place in my heart forever.

I imagine him in heaven in his boat on a beautiful body of water, pulling up crab traps, trawling or fishing. Then, he's on shore boiling crabs, shrimp and crawfish – Papa's seafood was the best ever. And he's healthy and smiling, surrounded by people he loves who love him very, very much.

We'll see you again, Papa. Save some crawfish, crabs and especially potatoes and garlic, for me.

I love you both, Meme, from the bottom of my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you always.

All my love and gratitude –
