Sandy, think of you often, and would love to be able to keep in touch, could you send your email or home address to me so that we can? Hope you had a blessed Christmas with your family.EM:jokoonce@sbcglobal.net

I am truly sorry for your loss and I pray that you and your family can find comfort and peace in knowing that David Austill was a good and great man who positively impacted the lives of innumerable young people in Southern Indiana.
I was one of those young men fortunate enough to have been influenced and shaped by David. He had a lasting and positive impact on my life with his lessons as a coach, a teacher and a man. He taught me to never, ever give up and to expect the maximum from myself and others. He made an indelible mark on my life and I have always truly appreciated him for it. I think of him and his lessons often.
Although I left the Newburgh area in 1977, I have kept up with David and his life over the years and I have had the great fortune to see him a few times when I visited Newburgh to see friends and family. I was deeply touched when he visited me at my father's funeral in May 2006.....and yes, I was the bald guy at the front of the room. I truly wish we would have had more time together as adults.
Sandy, I added two photos to your gallery, one where David, Tony, Tom and I were fishing in Canada at Lake of the Woods. We caught our limit of fish every day. And then, another where we were fishing at Toledo Bend in Texas and we were knee-deep in fish. Bert was on that trip with us as well and we had so many great stories about the trip; getting lost on the lake, running over buoys, trees falling in the boat and weathering a great storm.
I remember when I was a senior football player and you, David, Pat and I went to Dugger to scout a football game. We were desperate to win another game that year......and we did. We rode up there in that big boat of a car that David had....a big Pontiac convertible that he had to order special because it had an air conditioner as well. It was unheard of in 1965. I also remember that David worked with a writer from the Newburgh Register to write a puff piece about our football team and that upcoming game in order to motivate us....hard to do for an 1 and 8 team...but he did it for us.
But I especially remember the lessons we learned from coach Austill. He taught us to play with honor and to give 150% every play. I remember his first day of coaching at Castle High School. His message was simple....you have three downs to make 10 yards. If you only make four yards every play, you can always make more than 10 yards. How can anyone not make at least 4 yards a play. That was what he always expected and we did our best to give it.
We will all miss David, but he will never be gone from our minds and our hearts.
With my deepest sympathies,
David Hester
