Mr. Dudley Dickson

Thursday, August 14, 2014
Doris we were so sad to learn of the Loss of Dudley. We hold the time while at Lee College and your friendship close in our hearts. We have lived throughout the world since those years but the ones that we have crossed paths with in the US are especially wonderful to remember. We pray the Lord will hold you close as your life continues without Dudley by your side.

In thinking about what it was like growing up with Dudley Dickson as my grandfather, the word I keep coming back to is “adventure.” I was always so excited to go to The Lake, because as a young child, it was otherworldly, like a castle. From the fountain in the middle of the living room, to the Suit of Armor that stood watch over the Jacuzzi and now stands watch on the front porch. The trees growing in the middle of the house- ok- the enclosed porch- and the hammock in the back yard. Hunting for alligator sightings from the boat on the Lake. A pool IN the lake, because, why not? The first time I heard reggae was in one of his giant Cadillacs. Somehow being with Grandpa made everything seem more exciting, even when he convinced us to do manual labor for him. And of course the stories. The stories and the laughter.

As many people can attest, New York City was his favorite place in the world. Which makes sense, as it suited his sense of adventure, and in our family, there was a tradition for him to take people to New York for their 12th birthday, from his own children to Sev and I. I remember sitting at the dining room table with him preparing for our trip and he explained to me that there are 3 phases to every trip, or adventure if you will- planning, doing and reminiscing. He argued that each of these phases is equally important to the adventure. So here we are, in the last stage of the adventures that we have shared with Dudley Dickson, but I guess his adventures will never end as long as there are people reminiscing about times spent with him. And I have a hunch that Grandpa wouldn't mind at all if you elaborated a teeny bit as you recall times with him.
