I first met Mr.Cogburn in 1962 when I worked for Kalvort, Benn and Ward in the T. J. Bettes Building. He and Mr. Kalvort were friends and he helped the firm to take an appeal case all the way up. That case was against the Catholic Dioceses regarding a child played in its care. I was impressed with him from then on. Many years went by and my husband and I were at a party and ran into Mr. and Mrs. Cogburn. Many years went by from that time and what to my surprise he appeared on the elevator at The Lyric Centre where I worked. From then on, we had great conversations and he had total recall about so many things especially the first case I spoke about. I really enjoyed his stories and appreciate his strength and ability to be "at the office" almost every day. I talked with Mrs. Cogburn on several occasions in the Lyric Centre Parking lot when she drove him to work. He and I would walk the tunnel sometimes. What a scholar.
I first met Ed Cogburn in 1982 when I re-organized and led the Harris County Young Democrats. I count both Billie Carr and Ed as mentors. We kept in touch at various Democratic functions over many decades. He was first and foremost a gentleman and one of the most caring individuals I have been lucky enough to know. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I will miss his friendship and regret that distance will keep me from being at his funeral service.
My introduction to Ed Cogburn was through our beloved Billie Carr. Billie said go work with Ed on some projects and learn how to deal with people. I did and I learned. Ed taught me ethics, integrity and humility. He taught me different aspects of politics and real estate law. We enjoyed our times with Marilyn and Ed and the many funny stories that he told differently every time. In recent years and in failing health, he still managed to bring out that fabulous sense of humor. We have lost a genuine political asset.
I was so proud to call Ed my friend for many years. What a treat it was to have Ed serve as the Parliamentarian during my tenure as Chair of the Texas Democratic Party. Ed exemplified what all of us should strive to be., Charles Soechting, San Marcos, Texas
